Now that basically everyone has come to my long held vantage point on this smoldering train wreck, I like to reflect on what got us here.
If you recall, there was rumors that Kul and Odom never got along. Typically we get the story of "Kul was mean to Barry" once Odom was given the DC job or "Kul stole proprietary information" after he was not retained, yet there was no proof or retaliation on our end. Seemed biased from the beginning being that the "victor" will always get to frame the story to their liking. After what Kul has done here and Miami, however, it appears clear that Kul probably really was snubbed in the promotion. This leads me to my point of my post, Where would we be if Kul was hired as DC that year instead?
The first thing I think of is that Barrington remains at Memphis to take over the "rebuild" Fuentes would have handed him and guided them to 4-8 seasons, in a manner that we have all become familiar with. More relevantly to us though, is Kul probably never lets the Defense lapse like we have seen, in particular the Defensive Line.
Barrington never would have hired a guy like Kul, a coach with a proven track record of success. It makes more sense to hire a coach from a stalwart like Texas Christian, a team and a conference at the time known for Defense. Charles Harris for example, who had a down year, because of Barrington's ego and poor player development probably cost Harris millions. Charles made sure to tweet at Kul, thanking him for his success after the draft, a stinging indictment on not only Barrington's rapport with his players but a look at how invaluable Kul was to the team. Harris tweets for guidance from his old coach, surely while Barrington was pre-occupied with the tweets of 3rd String OL from Rock Bridge.
The Implications are clear and one can only think and speculate that Kul was the true heir to the Program all along. We let a Memphis level coach play us into the situation that we find ourselves in today. Hopefully, a blunder corrected by this time next month.
