FOOTBALL RECRUITING

The in-state tight end has picked up recent offers from Kentucky, Arkansas, and Kansas. He is also hearing a lot from Missouri's staff and intends to visit sometime in March depending on his basketball season. While the Tigers already have a tight end commitment in Gavin McKay, they will likely take two in the 2021 class, so Hoerstkamp is one to keep an eye on.

We feel that Colten Gautheir and Tyler Macon are Missouri's top quarterback targets at the moment, but they are also communicating frequently with Nussmeier as well. Drinkwitz and his staff re-offered the four-star signal-caller back in January, but they have a lot of making up to do with the likes of LSU, Penn State, and others already having a strong foothold in his recruitment.

Speaking of Gauther, he told us that he intends to visit Missouri again this spring and meet with the new coaching staff. He recently told Rivals.com analyst Chad Simmons that he's been in constant contact with Coach Drinkwitz.

We've got a story scheduled for the Kansas City product over the weekend, but he's another in-state prospect that recently visited Columbia and Missouri will continue to monitor going forward. The three-star prospect has early offers from Iowa State, Kansas State, Kansas, Arkansas, and Tulsa. He's already built a close relationship with linebackers coach DJ Smith and is very familiar with the Missouri program, having visited five times previously.

Sticking with the Kansas City, Lincoln College Prep theme - there has been a lot intrigue surrounding Okoli as well, a prospect Missouri offered back in January. His recruiting stock has seen a significant increase since December with multiple power five programs extending offers. Okoli told us that he is very interested in Missouri and plans on visiting campus for the first time in March. He's been communicating with Ryan Walters and Casey Woods throughout the recruiting process.

Continuing with the defensive line theme, Hanson was another prospect that visited Missouri at the beginning of the month. The three-star prospect has offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Northern Illinois, and Toledo so far. Special teams coordinator Erik Link is the point man here and the Chicago area product was really impressed with his trip to Columbia as well as Link's personality and enthusiasm. He's a prospect Missouri will continue to monitor throughout the spring.

The offensive line target is already lined up to be a national level prospect in the 2022 class, boasting offers from the likes of Alabama, Oklahoma, and many other power five programs. So, it was a big deal for Missouri to get Harris on campus with some of his teammates back on February 1st. The 6-foot-6, 320-pound prospect has known offensive line coach Marcus Johnson since his time at Mississippi State.

The Duncanville (Tex.) product has six early offers, three from power five programs - Kansas, Arkansas, and Missouri. Thursby told us he is definitely interested in Missouri and is planning to visit campus sometime either this spring or summer. Of course, Ennis Rakestraw is a Duncanville product along with freshman cornerback Stacy Brown.

Wingo got Mizzou's 2021 recruiting class kick-started when he committed to the Tigers on January 19th. Expect him to be the recruiting ambassador of the class, much like Brady Cook and Jay Maclin were for the 2020 class. I asked the three-star prospect who he's trying to get in the class right now, he said, "top of the list is Jakailin Johnson and Travion Ford."

We were able to confirm that Coach Drinkwitz and his staff have re-offered both Burden and Coleman, two of the top players that will make up the 2022 in-state class.

FOOTBALL TEAM TIDBIT

There has been some talk this week about Colorado being interested in Ryan Walters as its head coach. I spoke to someone who covers CU last night and he said that the AD out there really feels burned by the Mel Tucker departure (after he had already said he was staying) and that may lead to more of a push to get a Colorado guy who will view that as a more permanent job and won't bolt for the first Power Five gig that offers an extra million or two a year. Thus some of the buzz around Walters.

It seems pretty clear that Eric Bienemy is the top target. Whether he'd take it or not, I don't think anybody really knows, but CU will make him say no. If he does, would Walters become a possibility? It's not out of the question. But the common thought among people I've talked to (and I agree with it) is he's a guy they'd talk to, probably interview, but it's tough to see him actually being the hire in the end. He's 34, he's only been a full time coordinator for two years and he's never been a head coach. If Colorado wants to go that route, why wouldn't it hire Darren Chiavarini who is currently serving as the interim coach (Not to mention the last coach was a defensive coach and most schools tend to go the opposite side of the ball when hiring a replacement). My guess is if Bienemy says no, CU talks to Walters, gives him some experience in interviewing, but probably won't hire him.

The next question is if Bienemy takes the job, would he try to hire Walters as the defensive coordinator? Finances make that unlikely. Walters has a three year deal for $900,000 per year right now. Colorado's defensive coordinator made $500,000 last year. The entire pool for assistants was $3.1. The Buffs just can't afford to hire an SEC coordinator for the same job. If Bienemy were to take it, I think the bigger concern for Mizzou would be if he'd come after David Gibbs as DC. The two played together in Boulder, it would be a raise and a step up for Gibbs and another chance at running a defense. Obviously a lot of ifs there, but there is reason for Mizzou fans to pay attention to the Colorado search and where it ends up.

BASKETBALL RECRUITING
