The 2020 class is mostly signed, but it's not likely done. Eli Drinkwitz said on Wednesday that Mizzou had some "roster flexibility" going forward. That means there are likely to be some transfers out and some possible spots available. We're going to take a look at positions Missouri could use help in the transfer market (or maybe even a late juco find) in the 2020 class and then look to 2021.
First off, here is the unofficial scholarship count as of Wednesday. Missouri is at 81. The limit next year will be 81. That means the Tigers can add one scholarship for every one they lose (up to nine because you can't go over 25 in a given year; there are some ways you can, but we can't see Missouri adding nine guys in the spring, so we don't think it becomes an issue). We're not doing this off of inside information. We're doing it off of logic, common sense and our opinions based on the current roster.
THE REST OF 2020
*A grad transfer (or immediately eligible transfer) defensive end is almost a must have. There will be some out there. We don't know who at this point, but the Tigers need an impact player here immediately.
*Don't rule out a transfer quarterback (not a grad transfer), especially if Taylor Powell were to choose to transfer after spring football. We're not saying that will happen, but if he doesn't win the starting job for a new coaching staff, it's something you have to at least acknowledge as possible.
*Offensive line and corner are the other spots we could see a transfer, juco or grad transfer making sense.
LOOKING AHEAD TO 2021
We will assume Mizzou is at 81 scholarship players for the 2020 season. The limit for 2021 goes back to 85. The current roster has 19 seniors to be this year. Plus you get four back from the NCAA. That gives you a baseline of 23 scholarships for the 2021 class. We'll go ahead and say Mizzou signs a full 25 in Drinkwitz's first class. Here's how we see it breaking down position by position (roughly).
Quarterback: 1 or 2. They'll definitely sign one. I don't think two is out of the question, particularly if one has the athletic ability to play somewhere else down the road. If they do take a transfer this year, it's very likely to be just one, but if they don't, two is a definite consideration.
Running Back: 1. You could see two here, but with everyone except Larry Rountree slated to come back, one is probably enough.
Wide Receiver: 3. The Tigers are only going to lose two, which leaves them with 11 on the roster (plus Chance Luper, who very well could be on scholarship by this point). A lot of this number will likely depend on what the staff thinks of the players currently on the roster. However, you're also going to lose four after the 2021 season. We'll settle on three receivers for this class.
Tight End: 2. You have to have one. I think it's more likely you sign two because Mizzou didn't sign one this year.
Offensive Line: 4. The Tigers are pretty young here. There are ten linemen with at least three years of eligibility left. If everyone sticks around and the staff likes the young guys, you could go with just two or three here. Let's call it four, though, because some attrition could happen and you always need to stock the line.
Defensive Line: 6. This is without question the focus of the class. Missouri loses eight defensive linemen after this year. That leaves just seven on the roster, the most proven of whom is probably Darius Robinson (for real). We see a minimum of six defensive linemen in this class with a mix of junior college, high school and transfer players to help space out the classes. More than six won't be a surprise.
Linebacker: 2. Mizzou is in pretty decent shape here with six of the ten having at least three years left. In addition, the Tigers play a defense that really only has two traditional linebackers on the field at a time. We say they'll take two in this class...unless they think Nick Bolton leaves after next year, which is possible, then it might go to three.
Defensive Back: 5. We're not going to separate corner and safety. We'll just call them a group. There are nine secondary players with at least three years left right now, but the overall numbers on the roster are a bit low. We'll say the Tigers take at least a couple corners, a couple safeties and one that could play either.
This gets you to 24 players (if it's just one at QB). That leaves one spot for the best available or to go over somewhere or to add a specialist).
2021 PROSPECTS
With Missouri wrapping up the 2020 recruiting class on Wednesday, Drinkwitz and his staff have already began to prioritize the 2021 recruiting class by hosting some of their top targets throughout January.
That resulted in two early commitments from DeSmet (Mo.) defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo and Memphis (Tenn.) University School tight end Gavin McKay.
We take a closer look at some of the 2021 targets that we feel Missouri is currently prioritizing:
Travion Ford, DE, Lutheran North (Mo.)
Beau Stephens, OL, Blue Springs (Mo.)
Keontez Lewis, WR, East St. Louis (Ill.)
Dominic Lovett, WR, East St. Louis (Ill.)
Tyler Macon, QB, East St. Louis (Ill.)
Jakailin Johnson, DB, DeSmet (Mo.)
Thomas Fidone, TE, Lewis Central (Iowa)
Colten Gauthier, QB, Hebron Academy (Ga.)
Connor Tollison, OL, Jackson (Mo.)
Ryan Hoerstkamp, TE, Washington (MO)
With the exception of Gauthier, Hoerstkamp and Fidone, all of the above prospects visited Missouri over the past three weekends.
