Sometimes, The Chamber is here to lift your spirits, to make you feel like
And, other times, admittedly, The Chamber is a sobering experience. And you feel like
Sadly, PM'ers, we have a feeling this one might be a little more Charlie Brown than cartwheels.
FOOTBALL RECRUITING
- On Thursday night, Temple (Tex.) tight end target Jared Wiley released his Top 3 that included Houston, Texas, and Missouri. The Tigers were the first team to offer the three-star prospect back in December and that appears to hold a lot of weight as he's built a good relationship with Joe Jon Finley. Wiley has already taken unofficial visits to both Houston and Texas. In terms of Missouri visit, that could happen sometime this summer.
- Missouri was the first SEC program to pull the trigger on Lanier (Ga.) signal caller, earlier this week. The three-star prospect has seen his recruiting stock on an upswing during the spring evaluation period, earning offers from Pitt, Northwestern, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, North Carolina, and Vanderbilt. It will be interesting to see where Missouri stands when the spring eval smoke clears for Calzada. We're planning to catch up with him this weekend for an update.
- We were hoping to give you faithful followers an update on the three-star prospect after his official visit to Missouri last weekend. However, he has not returned our phone calls or messages after multiple attempts throughout the week. The Tigers were his first official visit and we're not sure where he'll visit next. However, Coker has recently picked up offers from Oklahoma, Texas, A&M, and others during the spring eval. In other words, this will likely be an uphill battle for Mizzou.
- While are attempts to catch up with Coker failed, we were able to find another target that has a spring official visit planned in DuPont Manual (Ky.) running back Aidan Robbins. The three-star prospect will be in Columbia from June 8th-10th. He's already taken an official to Vanderbilt in April. Robbins will also take June officials to Purdue (1st-3rd) and Kentucky (22nd-24th). He will be an early enrollee, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a summertime commitment. Robbins did tell our Purdue site, GoldandBlack.com, that he will likely save his last official visit for Stanford in the fall. He does not have an offer from them at this time.
The fact is, we've done as much digging as we can, and if hard-pressed to say "Who's the next commitment?" we really don't know. There's just not anybody we see ready to end the process in Missouri's favor right now. Do we know everything? Of course we don't. Could there be somebody out there who commits before we finish typing this? Sure. But it will surprise us as much as it will surprise you.
It's not all bad news, though. The Twitter machine gave you a couple reasons to hope this week.
We continue to feel good about Mizzou's standing with Marcus Washington. The Shammond Cooper tweet could be taken a couple ways really. Either Mizzou was his favorite growing up and that is a good thing or he used to dream of wearing the uniform but really doesn't anymore. Parsing the tweets of high school juniors is an exercise in futility, so we're not going to guess what it means. Chances at Cooper are better than they were a couple months ago, but probably still not great.
As we've been telling you for a while, May is always the slowest month of the year. A few months ago, we did an analysis of when commitments happen and May had the fewest over the last 15 years of any month. So there shouldn't be alarm bells ringing that things aren't super active right now. Camps will start to happen toward the end of May and in June and we should be able to get a much better idea of where things stand, who Mizzou is serious about and who is serious about Mizzou.
BASKETBALL RECRUITING
This is, again, more about who Missouri isn't going to get than who it is right now. Couple of developments on that front.
At one point, DJ Carton looked like a guy who Missouri had gotten in on early and had a shot at. Then he was offered by everyone and it started to seem like a longer shot. With the list above, it seems likely Carton is going to end up in the Big Ten.
This is even less of a surprise. Mizzou certainly pursued Francis Okoro, but it never really seemed all that likely. The three schools on top always seemed to be out in front. Our money would be on Purdue or Illinois.
There was this though
Bryant was the 2018 guy Mizzou checked in on a couple of weeks ago. We'd been told the delay in his recruitment had a lot to do with academics. We haven't yet seen any word that Missouri has offered him. If it hasn't happened by now, we question if it will happen. Bryant hasn't returned our messages recently. We'll be checking back in with his AAU coach to see if anything has materialized, but at this point, honestly, it's starting to seem less likely Missouri is going to go after him hard.
That means the roster at the start of the 2018-19 season is likely set, depending upon what happens with Jontay Porter (for the record, we would still expect him to stay in the draft, but nothing is likely to be official until after the NBA Draft Combine which runs next Wednesday through Sunday). We understand that some people are a bit panicked about the idea that the roster won't see any new additions. And we can't tell anybody how to feel about it. But our best guess is things are set for the start of the season. Cuonzo Martin has indicated he feels good about the roster. You wouldn't expect him to say anything else, obviously, but it's our feeling that there's much more positivity inside the program than outside of it right now.
Obviously things in recruiting can change at the drop of a hat. If they do, we'll pass along all of that information as soon as we can. Sean Williams will be at the Rivals 3-stripe camp in Nashville on Sunday where up to ten Mizzou targets could be participating. We'll have plenty of coverage from that and will keep you up to speed on the message board as things happen.
