BASKETBALL RECRUITING
Things will get interesting here next week. The transfer portal opens on Monday. Here's what we'd look for as far as Missouri's roster:
We know four players (Sean East, Nick Honor, Noah Carter, Connor Vanover) have to leave. Five are coming in. That means as of now, Missouri has 14 players slated for a scholarship next season (Kaleb Brown and Mabor Majak are walk-ons this year). Obviously you can only have 13.
Tamar Bates told @drewking0222 on Wednesday night he was coming back.
We'd expect Jordan Butler, Anthony Robinson and Trent Pierce to return, although it's obviously possible they look around.
We believe the staff wants to bring Caleb Grill and John Tonje back.
Curt Lewis barely played down the stretch. Tough to see him coming back.
Jesus Carralero-Martin has another year. Let's be honest, the only way this makes sense is if he's willing to walk on.
Aidan Shaw is probably the most interesting one on the roster. There is obvious athletic upside and arguments can definitely be made to keep him. But the development hasn't been there and playing time has been very up and down. And remember, the player has to want to come back too. The feeling from people we've talked to over the last six weeks has been that Shaw is likely to hit the portal. For the purposes of this discussion, we're going to assume he does.
If all of the above is correct, that's 11 scholarship players back (Brown and Majak aren't included in this conversation because they aren't on scholarship; if Gates wants to bring them back along with the other three walk-ons in Jackson Francois, Danny Stephens and JV Brown, that's fine, but they don't impact the numbers we're talking about). That means the Tigers have two spots in the portal. We expect them to take more, but that's the pure math of it.
We talked about Jevon Porter last week. From everything we've heard, Mizzou is a solid favorite here. If that comes together, you're looking at two more spots. Again, the numbers are flexible. NIL allows you to go beyond the 13 (honestly, Porter seems like an ideal candidate to be an NIL-funded "walk on"). We're not going to just randomly start throwing out names. We'll have to see who hits the portal over the next six weeks. We'll definitely be in contact with our sources and keep you up to date on players Missouri is in on, but we're not just going to throw out a bunch of random "Hey, maybe this kid wants to transfer" chatter at this point. But we'll keep you posted as things develop.
