FOOTBALL RECRUITING
- All indications point to Missouri making a big impression with Edwards and his family this past weekend during his official visit. The Tigers are definitely in the race and for now, we're hearing Florida State is also making a strong push. The three-star prospect tweeted that he'll release a Top 4 on Thanksgiving. So, we don't expect a commitment anytime soon. Ole Miss, Miss. State, Maryland, and Tennessee are also in the mix.
- On Wednesday, Fitzpatrick backed off his verbal pledge to Washington State which raised the question if Missouri would come back into contention for the four-star prospect. Fitzpatrick was planning to take a visit to Missouri before committing to Wazzu back in July. It turns out Louisville will likely be the major benefactor of the Michigan product reopening his recruiting process. Christian's brother, Dez, is a wide receiver for Louisville and the Cardinals have been pressing hard of late and are scheduled to get him on campus for an official visit this weekend. It seems the writing is on the wall. In addition, we are told Missouri may not have room at this point even if Fitzpatrick were to want back in.
- Missouri extended two new offers in the 2020 recruiting class this week in Duncanville (Tex.) cornerback Ennis Rakestraw and Nolensville (Tenn.) athlete and current Liberty commit Tim Coutras. Both are in the learning process about Missouri, but are interested in their new offers. Coutras told me that he plans to get to a game sometime this season. The Tigers are still in the market for defensive backs and both prospects fit the bill. Coutras was offered as an athlete with Missouri liking his abilities as both a safety and at wide receiver.
We project Missouri will look to add at least three defensive backs in this year's class - two cornerbacks and a safety. Their current top targets include South Carolina commit Dominick Hill, Dontae Manning, and Tyler Jones.
- Midwest analyst Josh Helmholdt caught up with the Cardinal Ritter product and Missouri legacy who will make his college decision at some point this month. The Tigers are officially out and he will decide between Minnesota, Arizona State, and Illinois.
- Former Missouri commit Antonio Doyle is coming off an official visit to Texas A&M last weekend, Midwest analyst Josh Helmholdt caught up with him for an update. He will take an official to Illinois this weekend and one to LSU on October 25th. Oklahoma received one in September. He will likely make a decision sometime after his LSU trip.
- We'll post updates from both running back commits next week, both were in town last weekend for the win over Ole Miss. Both had a great time in their return visits to Columbia and are excited about the season and playing for the coaching staff. As a reminder, Young will be an early enrollee. He told me he hopes to return for the Florida game in November.
- A bit of intrigue surrounding Mitchell's recruitment we found out this week. While the wide receiver target is listed as a 2021 prospect in our database, he can actually reclassify to the 2020 class because of his age. Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky have offered him for the '20 class. He told us that he is getting back in touch with Mizzou's staff, so we'll see what develops. Mitchell is originally from the Houston area (and friends with current Mizzou commit Robert Wooten) and just transferred to Cane Ridge (Tenn.) this summer, so there is a connection with the program.
BASKETBALL RECRUITING
The intrigue right now surrounds Terry, who decommitted from Michigan State earlier this week. From everything we've been able to gather, this was the decision of Terry and his family and not a situation where the Spartans moved on and encouraged him to look around. Certainly surprising for that to happen with a Michigan kid, but Spartans fans seem to have long been of the belief that Terry's father wasn't the biggest proponent of his son going to East Lansing and he has a now opened it back up.
We can't say for sure that Missouri is involved. But it makes sense. The Tigers were in his top five prior to his commitment to MSU. Cornell Mann recruited Monte Morris to Iowa State from the same high school back in 2013. While the Cyclones could be a draw because of that, Mann would be a draw as well. But there is some current chatter that Juwan Howard may keep Terry in-state at Michigan as well.
Unless we hear something that makes us change our minds, we're sticking with the belief that Cuonzo Martin will sign only Jordan Wilmore in the early period. The spring will be about what Josh Christopher does and probably look at a juco/transfer type to round out the class, then seeing if there is any more room based on who leaves the roster after this year.
