FOOTBALL RECRUITING
- The big news this weekend is the visit of Clemson graduate transfer QB Kelly Bryant. Bryant did confirm with Rivals.com that he's making the visit. Expect Missouri to roll out the red carpet. He is priority one in this recruiting class. The Tigers will stress how much they have coming back on offense and where they are in terms of an ability to win games compared to the other programs he's looked at.
Bryant has visited North Carolina and Arkansas so far. There is talk he may visit Oregon after Mizzou. However, Oregon QB Justin Herbert, a projected top pick in this year's NFL Draft, is saying he is going to come back to school for another season. Now, obviously things can change between now and the draft...but the key thing is that Bryant is going to make a decision and enroll somewhere in December and Herbert probably won't have made a public decision by then. It would seem to be a strange decision for a graduate transfer QB to go somewhere with a returning starter that would be a Heisman candidate and a first-round draft pick potentially blocking him from the field. But we'll see. Louisville and Baylor have also been mentioned as in the mix for Bryant.
- We have confirmed that another graduate transfer will be on an official visit this weekend in former Arkansas wide receiver Jonathan Nance. The Gulfport (Miss.) native decided to take advantage of the new redshirt rule this season after starting all four games for the Razorbacks, but only recorded a single catch for -2 yards.
Last season, Nance led Arkansas with 37 catches for 539 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran the ball five times for 62 yards with a long of 40.
Nance signed with Southern Miss out of high school before tranferring to Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College where he hauled in 31 receptions for 400 yards and three touchdowns as a freshman. He battled through a shoulder injury during his sophomore season, but finished with 13 catches for 153 yards.
Nance is set to graduate from Arkansas in December and will be a mid-year enrollee at his new school. As far as we know, this is the first visit he has taken. The big thing in the Tigers' favor here is that Nance played high school ball in Mississippi with Richaud Floyd. He was retweeting things about Floyd coming back last week. There was some talk on here a when Nance initially announced his intention to transfer that the two are hoping to reunite for one last season. Looks like that may be a possibility now.
- The longtime outside linebacker commit will also be back in Columbia this weekend for his official visit. Harrison committed to the Tigers back on March 20th shortly after an unofficial visit.
Other notes:
- The safety target out of Louisiana tweeted out on Wednesday night that a commitment is "coming soon." A couple of months ago, Missouri was probably in the driver's seat to land Carrell, however, a lot of things happened since then and the Tigers' coaching staff have moved on. For one, Carrell kept pushing back his planned visits and Missouri now sits well with both Stacy Brown and Jalani Williams with both recently taking official visits.
- In-state wide receiver target Marcus Washington will be making his announcement today at 2 p.m. at his high school. To reiterate what we've been saying for the past three weeks now, all signs are pointing to Texas here. As we've been saying, Missouri would take him, but can also live with the fact he's going elsewhere. There are some questions about Washington's speed for an elite level receiver (and those questions are not at all limited to Missouri). Opinions seem to be all over the board as far as Washington's potential at the next level. At this point, you all probably don't much care though.
- There will likely be some unofficial visitors in town as well. We'll run those down when we find out more, but the big focus of the weekend is the two transfers who could give Missouri an immediate impact QB/WR combo for next season.
We updated the football scholarship chart earlier this week. Missouri technically has six spots left. But we still project a full class of 25, so that means it's more like 11 scholarships. Obviously they want at least one more quarterback and one wide receiver. We'd also look for two defensive linemen, a couple of safeties, two to three offensive linemen and two "best available" spots.
Also make sure to look at the updated Perfect Class for the Tigers
BASKETBALL RECRUITING
A normal week for basketball recruiting seems to be prospects saying they'll do interviews but never actually doing interviews. That was the case with Kobe Brown, who visited last Sunday through Tuesday.
Many believe Missouri is in very good shape here, but Brown isn't talking at all since the visit. He has only visited Minnesota and Mizzou so far. He wouldn't necessarily have to make an early decision. We'll continue to try to track him down and get a little more insight on the process and where things stand.
We do expect Missouri to try to add one more player in this class in the early signing period for 2019. Brown is obviously the logical favorite since he was on campus last week. While that would technically put the Tigers over the limit for next year, that's really not a problem until everyone shows up in the summer and they'll be back down to 13 one way or another by then.
The ideal 2020 class remains Cam'Ron Fletcher, Josh Christopher and Caleb Love (plus quite likely a to be determined bigger body). Not a whole lot new on that front, other than Love having visited Indiana this week.
At this point, we'd probably say Love will be the toughest to get to CoMo. That doesn't mean Missouri is out of it at all. In fact, it probably says more about their standing with Fletcher and Christopher. At this point, the Tigers appear to be in really good shape with both of them...but there's obviously a long way to go.
