Welcome back to The Chamber, the first game-week edition since last season. Just a quick programming note — normally, Gabe gives his game break-down in these hallowed halls, but we’re changing up our content a bit. Game breakdowns will run on Saturday (or game-day) mornings instead of here.
As always, this is premium information for subscribers only, so please keep all #ChamberTalk on the Tigers' Lair.
On to football recruiting…
— Not a lot of big visitors this weekend, according to what we’re hearing and from talking to different prospects. We posted earlier in the week about the biggest uncommitted visitor that we’ve identified. For anyone that missed that, the big-time recruit is 2017 Kansas City (Mo.) Park Hill defensive end Chester Graves. He will be visiting with a few teammates — 2016 DB Davion Tyler, 2018 DB Devin Haney and 2016 long snapper Kolin Hayes.
Graves is the only one with a Mizzou offer at this time, but with Mizzou looking for another safety, Tyler COULD become an option with a strong senior year. Haney impressed over the summer at Mizzou’s padded camp and earned a private workout with the coaches. Graves, of course, is the top Missouri prospect in the 2017 class and a big priority for Mizzou.
(So much of a priority, in fact, that recruiting coach Andy Hill donned a rhinestone-emblazoned Park Hill hat to take pictures with Graves and family after a camp this summer.)
Graves has spoken highly of Missouri whenever we check in with him, and every indication is that Mizzou is in great shape to land the four-star prospect.
A possible 2016 visitor is Cape Girardeau (Mo.) athlete Al Young, who is trying to make it to Columbia on Saturday. At one point he seemed to be very close to landing an offer from Mizzou, but that doesn’t sound like it’s the case anymore. There are always academic concerns and then he did not perform as well at Mizzou’s summer camp as was expected. Still, he’s a very talented prospect that could play some defensive back — but it looks like the Tigers decided on Jerod Alton over Young and Lamar Anderson.
There will be a handful of commitments in for the SEMO game, as well. Tre Williams is making the short trip. Trystan Castillo is planning on making it. Houston (Texas) OLB Trey Baldwin is already in town with his dad, uncle and younger brother. His brother’s name is Starrland Baldwin, and he’s visiting as a prospect. He’s a 2018 defensive back/ wide receiver.
There will surely be some other visitors and we’ll check the recruit section tomorrow, looking for any notable prospects that we didn’t identify beforehand.
— On Tuesday, Sep. 1, football coaches could start calling 2016 prospects once a week and sending 2017 prospects direct messages. Craig Kuligowski and Andy Hill reached out to Graves. We’ve been told that the Mizzou coaches have been in contact with East St. Louis about 2017 wide receiver Jeff Thomas, but he’s pretty focused on his season right now.
2017 California four-star offensive lineman Wyatt Davis told PowerMizzou.com that he had not heard from Mizzou yet as of Tuesday night. Now, that could have changed between now and then, but regardless, he wasn’t too worried about it. He said he has a lot of interest in Mizzou and that he will definitely be in Columbia for a visit. There is a long way to go with the Rivals100 prospect — who is also a Tigers’ legacy — but Mizzou is in good shape right now.
Most other in-sate prospects I checked in with had not heard from Mizzou yet. DaRon Davis, Djimon Colbert, Jaevon McQuitty, Andrew Clair, Eli Ross, Reggie Crawford, Anthony Payne and Israel Smith had all heard from schools, but not the Tigers. None of them seemed too concerned about it, and out of that group only Davis has an offer.
The next closest may be McQuitty, but it’s tough to read because Mizzou will not take many wide receivers again next class. Hearing the Tiger staff is doing its homework on the Battle star — and there could be some news soon.
— We continue to hear that Mizzou is closely monitoring 2016 in-state receivers Roddrick Bryant and Harry Ballard III. It sounds like the staff thinks higher of Bryant, but if the coaches look at senior film and see something new, that could change.
(Typically, the staff wants to see the first three or four games of film during a senior year to make a judgment on recruits that don’t yet have offers.)
— This was posted earlier in the week, but with Drew Lock moving up to No. 2 on the QB depth chart, we will be keeping an eye out for any new developments regarding a 2016 quarterback. As of late this week, we heard that there was no indication that any quarterback would be leaving, but these things can change quickly. Zack Weatherly and Micah Wilson are names we’ve heard as possible targets if a 2016 quarterback is needed.
Basically, Missouri will continue to monitor 2016 QBs throughout the season. We’re not speculating on transfers, but IF players were to leave, that usually happens after the first semester.
Also, regarding Lock — this is a little bit of a hunch and a little bit from talking to people, but the PowerMizzou.com staff would bet he sheds his redshirt sometime in the second-quarter against SEMO…
