There were rumors that the offense this year would look more like a "pro offense." That just isn't the case.
While we have seen a few bootlegs (out of the shotgun) and quite a bit of two tight ends, this offense does not work against great teams unless your quarterback is a threat to run.
Early in the game, Mizzou actually looked like it could run over the left side. They were starting to establish a bit of a presence, but as Alabama does, they adjusted and showed they would not let us continue to do that.
That is the point where the QB (namely, Lock) has to keep the ball and run right. Now I don't know if Dooley told him we don't want you to do that in this game, or if Lock is afraid to do it, but until you keep the DE's and LB's honest, they key on one running back, and play action passes may work once or twice, but not with regularity.
Alabama found windows constantly. That is because Tua (and Hurts) are a threat to run it every time. Our LB's and DE's have to keep their eyes on both the running back and the QB. That split second is the time needed to free your backs. ( I know, plus our DBs stink right).
I would suggest either we should have been working on a real pro-style offense with two backs or Lock has to become a threat to run the ball - and just maybe - they aren't going to risk his pro career on taking a shot to gain 8 yards. When he has done so, it has worked, but they do not go back to it often enough. It cost them in the South Carolina game and rendered them hopeless most of the night last night. Of course, not saying we would have won, but certainly been more productive.
