First off let me say that I don’t not post here often and am normally a ghost reader, however this is something that I am close to. Being someone who has been closely around the softball program due to my girlfriend being a player within the past few seasons, I can confirm that this is not any new situation that came out of nowhere but a reoccurrence of ongoing issues.
This isn’t just an issue of “being to hard on players”, but it is downright verbal abuse. I cannot repeat some of the things he has said to many players, many of which I would not say to people I strongly dislike.
Also, the notion that this is just a small group a few players who dislike him or “can’t take the criticism” is 100% wrong. About half of the team has had a problem with him and his treatment of fellow girls. That’s why so many players have transferred/quit the program within the past few seasons especially. He has even berated girls for not returning for another year of eligibility because they refused to take out thousands of student loans, and he decided to bench players because of it.
As for the timing of why now? Well I know recently within the past week a player/ players parent wrote a letter to Sterk explaining the current situation of the program and many of the things he has said to players and I have to believe this influenced Sterk’s decision. Obviously the timing could have been much better.
