Fire Odom. Not today necessarily...give him a few more games. But I have a feeling we have seen the ceiling of what he can do as a head ball coach and it is simply not good. He is by all accounts a great guy and he loves our University. He should be treated with respect and with class and allow him to resign or be relieved with dignity, as much as possible. But, make no mistake. He is WAY over his head here. That hurts. And it hurts to see the hurt on his face in that press conference. I almost couldn't watch the whole thing. You know he wants nothing more than to achieve amazing things. But I just feel that there is no hope of a resurrection with him at the helm. And, as y'all know that have been here awhile, I always have HOPE. Always. But I knew deep down that this was a trap game for Mizzou and we would take Purdue lightly. Honestly, I did think we were going to lose that game. But nowhere in my worst nightmares did I think we would see that kind of performance. Ever. So he must be relieved of his duties. As soon as possible. Have Andy Hill or Cornell Ford finish out the season as the Interim Head Coach.
Some of you will say that it does no good to fire a coach in midseason. Well, DABO SWINNEY says hello. Clemson would not have anywhere close to the success they have had without him.
Speaking of Clemson, we should definitely have Brent Venables on our short list. He has done a great job there and also did at Oklahoma and KSU. Knows the area and knows the South.
I guess the question is -- Are we in the SEC? Do we have a commitment to football? Simple yes or no questions. If the answer is yes, then we must do what every SEC school would do and that is to take control of the situation and try and salvage a bit of the season.
No SEC coach in history would ever tolerate the QB play we have seen from Drew Lock and never once move towards the backup. It's incomprehensible. I think we have seen the sample size of Drew Lock, and it's simply horrid. He has won 6 games in 3 seasons. I think 17 losses. That's a literally HUGE sample size in major college D1 SEC football. He doesn't have "it." And it's not even close.
The QB is the most important player on the team. As he goes, so goes your team. As someone who has coached before, you need to recognize that sometimes your player just doesn't have it. Brohm pulled his QB for a couple of series when he was completing 85% of his passes...because he sensed his awareness had slipped. Odom won't pull the QB even after back to back (did he really throw that pass?) pick sixes in a close game.
So, yes, you let him coach 2-3 more games. See what happens. If the same kind of losses happen then you pull the trigger and let him go.
Then---You go big on this hire. I for one am willing to increase my TSF contribution to make that happen.
Sincerely,
Guy Furay
