I was listening to The Eye On College Basketball Podcast this morning. Greg Norlander, and Gary Parish. IMO this is the best cbb podcast. Those dudes are hilarious, and provide great commentary and insight.
On today's episode, they discussed a twitter exchange Tyler Herro had w a Wisconsin fan. He said that if he went to Wisconsin, he'd still be in college. He said the coaches there are great dudes, but no top talent wants to play in that system. I couldnt help but think that is dead on description of Cuonzo.
Last week, Norlander wrote a piece on Underwood and how he completely changed his coaching philosophy after realizing that what he had done his entire career was not going to work at Illinois. He brought in some NBA analysts over the summer, looked at metrics, film and completely changed the way he coaches his team.
"We knew from that we had to make changes defensively, even though we were turning people over at an extremely high rate," Underwood told me. "Second in the country, but on the back end it wasn't worth it. We were fouling too much, were starting almost every game down eight points at the foul line. We were not maximizing with free throw attempts for us or picking up offensive rebounds for extra possessions. We felt that combination was too difficult to achieve at the highest level, to balance it out. That forced changes."

Again, that defensive system that is great a turning over the opponent, at the cost of fouling too much, and not getting ORBs reminds me of Mizzou.
Since for better or worse Cuonzo will be at Mizzou for 2 more years, I hope he can look around the league and adapt like some of his peers.
Discuss. Or not.
