Lots of people are venting right now. They're upset about football. Apathetic about basketball. Frustrated at the state of the university. Well, you can do something about it, folks.
No doubt, it's been a rough year. I sigh at times hanging out my Mizzou flag. Our watch parties in Indy are small. When I hear an alum yell, "M-I-Z," which happens more than you think here, it can lead to a five-minute chat that's filled with commiseration. We can't find relief with our major revenue sports, either.
But the institution is only as strong as the people that comprise it. Doing a little bit can make a difference.
Now, I'll sit back and let cynics mock me.
EDIT | There are posters who have certainly done their fair share over the years, too. Thank you. Sometimes, you may not hear that enough. Thank. You. You're vital. You've bought in. And you can best explain to others why they should, too.
- Athletics | Join TSF. It supports athletes. And, if you're inclined, reach and touch base with a development officer about other areas you can support. You don't get elite facilities without dollars. You don't have funds to pay for elite coaches or support staffs. You don't have stadium upgrades that bring in revenue. It can be $50. Invest. Put skin in the game.
- Academics | Again, give. It can be to the Our Time To Lead campaign. You can support scholarships. You can give back to your school or department. Or join MUAA. It shed almost 2,500 members last year. We're at 42,500. The goal is to reach 50,000 by 2020. It's $50 a year, or $1,000 for a life membership. Those dollars support scholarships for worthy students. It helps us recruit high-caliber students if we invest directly in them. I serve on the chapter board in Indy, and we're looking at ways to get more involved in the community -- days of service, college fairs and endowing a scholarship. You can donate $50 and a little time. Together, it makes the institution better. And high-quality leaders look at it, too. They want to see the school has resources, that is has alumni and faculty that buy in.
- Advocate | The state of Missouri can do more to fund higher education, and not just at Mizzou. Let them know higher education can be a spur for economic growth and about the value to our citizens. Find your state senator. Or state rep. Sure, it's a note or e-mail. It may fall on deaf ears. But it's worth trying. Or even better: Vote for officials who have boosting higher-education funding as a plank in their platform. Hold those who don't accountable. You can do it 10 days, too.
