I signed up for the free SLING preview and am watching a replay of Utah’s last game against Mississippi Valley State U on the PAC-12 network. I’m certainly not as knowledgeable about basketball as many of you on here, but here is my two cents at the half:
  • MSVU is really, really bad, so it is hard to draw too many conclusions.
  • The crowd won’t be a factor. Their arena is so empty I was sure KA had taken over coaching duties.
  • Their starting center is pretty good (#13 - Collette). JT is going to own him early, but will probably foul out by early 2nd half.
  • The announcers keep saying this coach always has a great defensive team, but it didn’t show up in the first half. To be fair MSVU is so bad they didn’t seem very fired up, but Utah gave up some pretty easy baskets to very mediocre players.
  • They move the ball well on offense. They were missing shots, but they also had some really good cuts for easy buckets. Good coaching.
  • The don’t look nearly as athletic as we do. The have some size at the 3, 4 and 5 but they also look much slower than our bigs.
I’m definately wearing black and gold glasses, but I don’t see how we lose to these guys unless we have a really bad shooting night or get a few players in foul trouble. We look a lot smoother on offense, more aggressive on D and overall a lot more athletic. I think we are going to be pleased with the results again, with or without MPJ.
