Quick recruiting notes first.
*We don't have it confirmed yet, but it appears Verdis Brown will take an official visit this weekend. Interim OL coach Jon Cooper tweeted this yesterday:
Cooper, as we reported yesterday, was set to see Brown. Connect the dots.
*Tyler Badie confirmed he will visit this weekend. A commitment would not at all be a surprise.
*Offensive line targets Johncarlo Valentin and Jahmir Johnson will visit Tennessee this weekend. Have noticed the Vols offering a lot of guys Mizzou has been in on under the new staff with Jeremy Pruitt.
*Some notes from the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas are here
The part you'll be interested in concerns defensive end Trajan Jeffcoat.
Listed at 6-foot-5, Jeffcoat could be an ideal candidate to play the hybrid role at the next level. He’s still adjusting to playing in space but with his size and quickness off the edge he will be a nightmare for tackles and running backs to pick up when he’s rushing the passer. Right now Missouri looks to be in the lead for Jeffcoat, with a commitment expected to come this month.
We've long had Jeffcoat on the list of guys we expect to be part of this class. It will be a surprise if he isn't.
Okay, now on to the coaching stuff and I've got some worthwhile info, I believe (and please, guys, even though I know it's not likely to happen, keep this stuff here--this is what you pay for):
*UCLA offensive coordinator and interim head coach Jedd Fisch has emerged as a serious (leading?) candidate for the opening at Mizzou, according to information I've gathered in the last 24 hours. Sources indicate Fisch will meet in person with Barry Odom in the next few days. My understanding is that no deal is done with anyone, but I'm confident Fisch is on the short list. I believe there could be more interviews that occur in the next few days as well, but I don't have any names on those at this point. Conversations have been ongoing with a number of candidates.
Under Fisch, UCLA improved by 9 points and 85 yards per game this year on offense. Josh Rosen threw for 3700 yards, 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Jim Mora got fired, but it wasn't because of Jedd Fisch's offense. I read up a little bit on his offense and he does a bit of everything. UCLA was pass heavy this year, which probably has as much to do with having Rosen (and a run game that averaged 3.8 yards per carry) as anything). He has significant NFL experience and has been an OC at Minnesota, Miami and Michigan...and he's still only 41 years old.
One last note: Fisch was hired at Michigan on January 9, 2015. Reports at the time indicated Michigan made a late push for Drew Lock prior to National Signing Day 2015. So that's interesting.
