what does it take for witter to lose ccarries

What exactly does strong and crockett have to do to unseat witter. I understand some blocking schemes and such, but drives like the 4th where every play was a run, would have been a perfect time to bury the big backs. So far, witter and Ross look slower than Crockett and strong. Just wandering what needs to take place to upgrade our running game. I think witter has been good but he's just limited.
