17-23 year olds to work together to form a good team.
First, there has to be many of them with the physical skills to be good at playing football.
Next, not all of them will be the front runners for playing. It can take time to find out which ones have what it takes, skill wise.
Then it is finding those that really want it. Work ethic, willingness to put in the time and effort.
We will only play about 1/2 of them come the season, but there is the off season to deal with too. Players do follow the leaders, but they also watch the other guys that might be the pushers. If there isn't many of them, the others won't be working as hard as might be needed.
This is a game! Games are supposed to be fun. Many like to play these games because they don't like what they see as "work"! A job! Those are not supposed to be fun. That's work!
Chemistry and not the course taken in school. With 105 guys that spend the bulk of every day around each other there is bound to be friction somewhere. How will they deal with it? Quietly or loudly! Does it become some negative behavior that irritates most of the others.
Pack mentality! Which way does it go? Almost all of it depends on the leaders. Strong leaders can control the pack's direction. Weak leaders allow it to be like a river and find it's own course. Bad leaders will send it down the toilet.
Coaches have a great deal of responsibility on how this all goes, but coaching in today's world is not like the world that The Bear or Rockne coached in. Today's youth is less self disciplined as a group than the ones those guys coached in. Lots of reason for that too. Money and the lack of money in today's families is probably at the top of the many reasons. The decline of the family unit is a close second and when combined with the lack of money in that family it can be a pretty devastating combo.
A lot of today's kids come in with a great work ethic and a determination. If that is not channeled toward success in the acceptable manner of our world it sends that kid out the door so to speak.
It is hard to get all 105 kids to go in the direction that we need.
My point is that from class to class if we have the kids that have goals that fit the idea of success for all it is much easier for coaches to get the team to perform together. I think, as many here do, that 2015 was a year that broke apart a lot of the unity of the program. It is taking time to put it back together. BO will not get have the leeway that Gary Pinkel had. This 16 years shows how much the internet as changed our world in that short span of time.
