First I have been Zo’s biggest or at least one of his biggest supporters here. I still do not think you fire him. However, it is becoming harder and harder to defend some of his decision making.
This is two games in a row where your starting PG is fouled out to end the game. The previous game your back up PG was out for some still unexplained (as far as I know) reason. You signed a highly talented, albeit flawed, PG in Mario. You have to let the kid play. It would be one thing if you had a finely tuned machine out there. You could even argue when the defense was great that any offensive spark was not worth it. That is no longer the case.
I can’t believe I am going to say this, but Mitchell Smith was one of your best players in the first half and he doesn’t see the floor in the second half. I get it Tilmon decided to try (more on this in a moment) in the second half but Mitchell can play the 4. I know you have two highly talented freshman at that position. Neither is lighting up the scoreboard though.
I have no idea what is going on with Tilmon. He showed absolutely zero effort in the first half. He literally did not even jump for the jump ball to begin the game. WTF. You can’t just play half a game and expect to win, even versus a terrible team.
Speaking of only playing a half you can’t spot the opponent the first ten minutes of the game. 3 games in a row now we have done absolutely nothing for the first 10 minutes and have fallen behind double digits. That can’t happen.
So what do we do now? I mean unless we lose out you probably can’t fire Zo. He worked a miracle his first year here. His second year he did a good job even though the season did not end the way we wanted there were circumstances beyond his control. The fact he fielded a competitive team was impressive. Most of us scoffed at the preseason ranking of 13th in the SEC. it looks like it may have been generous. I could live with a bad season if there was reason to think this was going to get much better. Zo has been ripped for his recruiting. I don’t think it has been fair up until a few months ago. The last two commits are mind blowing stretches of kids to take. You are probably going to lose your big man next year as well with no clear person to take over.
Being that Zo has a guaranteed contract and the money we need to spend on football he is going to be here to stay. So we may need to change up the assistants. The guys we have obviously have not done much with recruiting. They obviously have not been able to bring any kind of offense to the team. So we need to look hard at someone who can bring a top player or two with them. Then maybe a tactician who can teach someone how to play offense.
Changing out assistants is really the only move we can make this year once Sterk decided to move on from Odom. Hopefully this is just me being premature and the team is just on a terrible three game slide that is corrected right away.
