Why I like our offense...

After taking a few days to shake that one off...I feel like I'm ready to have reasonable discussion again. I've seen a lot of talk about what we need to do to be better on offense.

I'll start with a quick refresher on personnel:
11 Personnel = 1 RB, 1TE
12 Personnel = 1RB, 2TE
21 Personnel = 2RB, 1TE
And so on...

We want to be an 11 Personnel team or single back. It's basically a hybrid between old school and new school. It allows for Spread principles but it IS NOT an air raid offense. I'm onboard with 11 Personnel because it is the easiest way to create mismatches and be multiple. When you start bringing multiple Rbs and TEs(especially attached TEs) you're saying 1 of 2 things:

1. We are physically better than you
2. We don't think you can line up right

I've never seen or played in a defense that is going to intentionally let an offense outnumber them in the box. Every gap is accounted for (even if it's a corner up in the box in a closed formation i.e., no WR out wide.) I don't believe at this time Mizzou has the players to play this way. These are you true blue bloods that can attract enough of these players at one time.

11 Personnel with in our case Nate Brown replacing that 2nd TE or H, stresses a defense horizontally and vertically in principle. Here's why:

If your base defense is a 4-3, you're asking a WLB to walk out or split the difference between our 6-3 WR and OT. He's effectively out of the box. Now you've spaced the box horizontally and your safety needs to declare if he's going to stay high or come down. This doesn't even touch on the fact that most LBs can't run with a WR. This is where you get into Nickel personnel on defense or your 4-2-5 defenses with an extra DB coming in. This is an opportunity to run the ball...the key here is the H needs to block.

Heard a stat today regarding the cowboys who are widely regarded as having a top 3 OL:

11 personnel = 4.91 yds/car on 12 carries
12 personnel = 2 yds/car on 8 attempts
13 personnel = 2 yds/car on 2 attempts

That's the theory. The bigger issue(where we have problems) is now what to do, when to do it, and how to execute it. I'm going to preface this by clearly stating I am not an offensive guy. I look at things from a defensive perspective and what worries me.

Like I said, that H WR is the mismatch player. Take advantage of it. If you have a DB in the game in place of the LB run the ball. It doesn't have to be at that player as you can run inside zone, outside zone away. You can run counter back at that DB. You have to take advantage of the fact that you have equal numbers in the box. Drew Lock appears to be a pretty decent ball handler, play action with primary routes into the middle intermediate zone ala Kentucky. Keep the defenders thinking...take some pressure off of your OL.

All that said, the best play calls in the world turn to crap if we don't lay a hand on the man in front of you. The players just have to realize, it's not one on one pass rush drills in games. The space is tighter and the DEs typically have a specific gap they need to rush through. Just relax play your technique and realize a defender has to come to you.

Just my thoughts
