AUSTIN, Texas – Mizzou (22-10) fell 73-55 at Texas (30-4) Monday night at the Frank Erwin Center. Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) led the Tigers with a game-high 23 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Sierra Michaelis (Mercer, Mo.) added 11 points and four boards in 16 reserve minutes.


Cunningham finished in double figures scoring for the 21st time and notched 20-plus points for the 10th time during her freshman season. Michaelis moved into a tie for eighth in program history with 116 career 3-pointers, equaling Stacy Williams (1990-94).


Mizzou opened the game on a 6-0 run on two 3-pointers by Cunningham before Texas answered with a 17-3 run to close the period. The Tigers held Texas scoreless for the game’s first 3:26. Mizzou shot only 3-for-16 (19 percent) from the field in the first quarter.


The Longhorns outscored Mizzou 19-12 in the second quarter and took a 36-21 lead into halftime. During the first two quarters, Texas outscored Mizzou 22-0 in points in the paint.


Mizzou outscored Texas 19-18 during the third quarter, including nine points in the period by Cunningham. The Tigers trailed 54-40 heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.


Texas closed the game with a 19-15 fourth quarter. For the game, the Longhorns outscored Mizzou 38-10 in the paint and held a 47-33 rebounding advantage.


The Tigers shot 31 percent (16-for-51) from the field, 29 percent (8-for-28) from 3-point range and 88 percent (15-for-17) from the free throw line. Texas shot 41 percent (30-for-73) from the floor, 42 percent (8-for-19) from beyond the arc and 45 percent (5-for-11) from the foul line.

POSTGAME NOTES

·Mizzou is now 2-23 all-time against Texas and 0-12 in games played in Austin.

·The Tigers fell to 5-10 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

·Head coach Robin Pingeton is 1-1 in the NCAA Tournament with Mizzou and 1-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament after previously leading Illinois State to the big dance twice.

·Pingeton is now 101-89 (.532) since taking over prior to the 2010-11 season. She has a 436-246 (.639) career record in 21 overall seasons.

·Sophie Cunningham reached double figures in scoring for the 21st time and scored 20-plus points for the 10th time in 32 games during her freshman season.

·Sierra Michaelis drained three first half 3-pointers to tie Stacy Williams (1990-94) for eighth in program history with 116 career treys.

·Morgan Stock closed her career with 138 3-pointers, which ranks fifth in program history. Her twin sister,Maddie Stock, finishes her Mizzou career with 131 triples, which ranks sixth in team annals.
