Since we had a boss thread I thought we could have a peer thread too.
I have had multiple instances of politically-motivated peers who have jumped into my swim lane, stirred up a bunch of unsolicited crap for me to deal with. Then they either disappear or stir up further crap. They tend to be people who are more political than competent. It drives me effing insane. If you want to tell someone else how to do their job, you should at least take some care to make sure you know WTF you are talking about.
My favorite tactic is to let them puff up their chests for a while and say stupid things in front of leadership. Then I say to the leadership that they are trying to impress: "We can absolutely do that. However, the impact will be _____________." These people tend to have a talk that's bigger than their walk, so there is always a cost overrun, high risk situation or schedule delay that you are signing up for if you accept their premise. One dude was trying to get my budget for a project cut be a couple hundred thousand dollars. If we listened to him, we would have lost a $1M budget guarantee from our vendor. I would have been really embarrassed if I had stepped in it that badly. This guy just acted like nothing happened.
