DETROIT – Freshmen Keegan O’Toole became the University of Missouri wrestling program’s ninth individual national champion Saturday night inside Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, defeating returning champion Shane Griffith in a tight 6-5 final at 165 pounds.

The Tigers closed the 2021-22 season with a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, concluding the tournament in the top-10 for the seventh consecutive season. Below is how the leaderboard finished.

  1. Penn State — 131.5
  2. Michigan — 95.0
  3. Iowa — 74.0
  4. Arizona State — 66.5
  5. Nebraska — 59.5
  6. Northwestern — 57.5
  7. Cornell — 54.5
  8. Virginia Tech — 52.5
  9. Missouri — 49.5
  10. North Carolina State — 49.0

For the tenth consecutive season, Mizzou picked up multiple All-American honors. In addition to O’Toole, freshman Rocky Elam also took home his second consecutive All-American award, finishing fourth at 197 pounds.

Missouri received points from seven of its nine qualifiers. Redshirt freshman Noah Surtin and redshirt sophomores Zach Elam and Peyton Mocco all finished with three wins, bowing out of the tournament in the All-American round. Redshirt sophomore Jeremiah Kent picked up two wins and junior Allan Hart contributed with a first-round win.

Hear from Coach Smith

“This is what Keegan was born to do,” head coach Brian Smith said. “He was able to make adjustments mid-match and to do that at such a high level speaks to how intelligent he is as a wrestler. It’s just a testament to the work ethic and dedication he puts in on and off the mat every single day.”

“I’m so proud of our team and the fight they showed in every single match of the tournament. Seven straight seasons finishing in the top-10 isn’t an easy thing. We still have a lot of room to grow and I’m so excited for next year and the future of Tiger Style.”

Hear from Keegan O’Toole

“I was ready to throw down, no matter what the circumstances were,” O’Toole said. “I knew that going into the match, it didn’t matter how I was feeling; I had to find a way. I have amazing people around me and that’s why I’m here. Without them, I wouldn’t be the person that I am.”

On comparing his Junior World Championship to NCAA Championship

“Worlds is pretty cool, but this is the pinnacle of Folkstyle wrestling in America. To be able to accomplish it on my second try is unbelievable.”

On his teammates

“Everyone on the team that lets me drill; those are the people that you don’t see that are the ones that deserve this award.”
