Rewatched the game 2nd half because this narrative about TAM pushing our bigs around bothered me. Yes, Porter bombed out in this game. No argument. Tyler Davis took his soul with that block late in the first half. Y’all are wrong on Tilmon though.
First of all he played much better defense. Many more plays where his feet stayed planted and his arms were vertical, with no foul. On both Robert Williams and Davis. Still got the early one where he had bad technique and had is hand extended outward on Davis. The one in the 2nd where he is vertical on Davis but slightly drops his hands as he gets beat baseline. The charge he tried to take baseline right but he was inside the circle. He can improve there, but the foul rate was much slower. Also, no offensive fouls or rebounding fouls. Huge in my opinion him not fouling in those situations.
Tilmon’s 2nd half offensive game was very nice. First possession, on the right block where he banged Davis twice and then went to the left hand hook for two. Two plays later beats Davis down the floor for excellent position at the rim, Geist sees him late.
Next possession, entry pass to left block, Tilmon rips through, bangs Davis again for position, nice right hand jump hook misses. Shows great footwork, body control and touch on both sides of the paint.
Next defensive possession, just stays vertical and planted on Davis in the lane, who misses. Next defensive matchup on Davis, stays vertical on Davis’s short J, miss and boxes him out. Kassius takes it up hits a 3, Mizzou is back to 30-31. Tilmon comes out.
On first MU shot after next TO, Tilmon offensive rebound, pivot to jump hook and miss. Still nice work.
Next possession gets reverse layup cutting in from weak side on Robertson drive.
Defense now, helps on a driver recovers to Williams, steal.
Next offensive possession, the most impressive. Left side short corner really, faces up Davis with reverse pivot, whisk, two bangs to the chest knocking this 260 pounder back and putting him in the rim, finally hits the right hand jump hook.
Tilmon showed nice footwork and control on his postups, used both hands, hit the offensive glass for extra shots, cut to the rim with timing. Played a very nice game during the stretch where Mizzou briefly took the lead. VERY encouraging in my opinion. The idea he plays at one speed, didn’t bang with aTm’s bigs, etc is BS.
I need you guys to drop preconceived narratives and start watching the game. There is lots to learn, ESPECIALLY when you lose.
