Israel told civilians where to flee to prior to attack to root out Hamas. As civilian casualties mounted, difficult to say exact count because Hamas is in charge of counting and how many are Hamas or chose to stay to help Hamas is impossible to ascertain. But the left mobilized quickly against Israel as has been their choice in their oppressor/oppressed singular view of the world.
Suddenly administration sees its closest ally, the extreme left, in everything they have done objecting to their policy. Demonstrations demonizing Biden along with Israel caught them by surprise. Immediately their standing with Israel became one of chiding Israel to be gentle. Hamas was seldom mentioned.
We allowed over 165 attacks from the proxies of Iran who is in charge of Hamas funding and planning. We had mild strikes to inflict minimal damage and seemed to emphasize we don’t want to upset Iran. We’ve lost 5 dead Americans, 130 injured, some critically, and allowed Iran to close the Red Sea to shipping. But our emphasis has been on stopping Israel in Gaza. That would leave Hamas intact and Iran in control and a Palestinian population that by a huge majority wants Israel off the map.
Though it is not certain that they will do it, the administration, hemorrhaging support of young voters and the left, is considering recognizing Palestine as a state in concert with other countries and making it a fete accompli.
So Hamas attacks Israel in a barbaric manner and cause the destruction of Gaza, they are rewarded with a two state solution with one wanting still to wipe Israel off the map.
