"After the Cotton Bowl received USC and Tulane in last season’s game, we’re told this season’s matchup will “most likely be two teams ranked in the top 10-12 of the final CFP Rankings.” It's unlikely the selection committee and ESPN puts the Group of Five champion back at this venue in an effort to spread the love a bit. There’s no specific conference tie-in any longer in this game and the Cotton Bowl has no influence in which teams will play in its game. That said, sources tell 247Sports that Texas had made it clear the Longhorns prefer "leaving the state" for bowl season if they're not selected for the playoff."
