GABE DeARMOND ON THE DIXON SITUATION

We're going to start with the story that everyone is talking about. I'm going to do my best to lay out as much information as I can and try to keep my opinions out of it. You guys can make your own judgments.

First of all, understand that there are things that you hear and are told that you simply can't share. There are privacy laws and things that are designed to protect people. They exist for a reason. With that said, I'll share as much as I can about what led up to last night's "transfer."

In late August, I got a tip from someone that there had been a complaint filed against Michael Dixon by a female. I made calls to the relevant law enforcement agencies as I always do in these situations and found nothing. Over the next few days, what I found out was that a complaint had been filed, but that it was not viewed as a situation that would have any legal foothold at all. Basically, the case would be thrown out of court immediately if it even got that far. It was on the radar, but not considered to be a huge concern.

Now, when I have to cover situations like this, my approach is always that I do not write a story until charges are filed. Because until that point, there really IS no story. Why drag a kid's name through the mud when charges aren't filed and there is a chance that he did nothing wrong?

Anyway, as the start of the season approached, I got a tip that Dixon would likely be suspended for three to five games. This suspension was in some way related to the complaint that was filed, but there had also been some academic issues. Hence Frank Haith's statement at the start about the suspension being related to violation of team rules and the standards Mizzou athletes are held to socially and academically.

At this point, the accusation was still not considered a big deal. It was there, but it was something that didn't look to have legs. Now, at some point, I believe it was the weekend of the Tennessee game, I started to get the vibe that something had changed. One person told me the August complaint had come back up. What we know now that we didn't know then is that the accuser had basically been told she had no case and in response, filed a complaint with the Student Conduct Committee.

That committee voted to expel Dixon from school from what I was told. How much weight this particular accusation carried, how much they knew about the 2010 stuff and how much the previous academic troubles and suspension had to do with it, I don't know. I can't say because I don't even know who is on the board, much less what they were thinking.

Dixon appealed the decision to the Chancellor. During the appeal, he was allowed to remain on the bench and practice and travel with the team. Due to that fact, many including myself, viewed it as a sign that he had a decent chance to win the appeal.

Last week, from the Bahamas, Dixon tweeted that he had "done nothing wrong." There were also tweets from Kim English expressing support for Mike. In response to those tweets, the girl who had filed the August complaint took to Twitter saying Dixon had raped her, etc. Most of you saw these tweets. That was really the event that brought this much more into the public eye. It fueled wild speculation over the next few days. Haith opened his post-game press conference from the VCU game stating that Dixon was still suspended and that he would ONLY discuss the game and ONLY take questions about the game.

Fast forward to this week and the police report about the August incident was obtained by multiple Missouri media outlets. The story, by most accounts, actually made Dixon's case look better. Most felt there was no way to call what had happened a rape. The prosecutors felt the same way. At that point, many started to believe that Dixon would eventually be reinstated.

That's where we stood on Thursday morning. What we didn't know at that time is that another story was about to come out detailing the January 2010 complaint against Dixon. It's not my place to judge how accurate the report is, who was in the wrong, etc. I don't know. I've certainly talked to people that believe the 2010 report carries no more validity than the 2012 one did. As isolated incidents, neither one of these probably carry enough weight to get Dixon suspended, much less kicked out. But they weren't isolated incidents. Combined with the academic issues over his career, they add up to a pattern of behavior that didn't reflect very well on the basketball program.

As I posted last night, I have been told that the decision to part ways between Dixon and Missouri had been agreed upon prior to the publication of the story in the Post-Dispatch. That is supported by the fact that Dixon did not practice with the team yesterday (practice began a couple of hours before publication of the story) and that by 6 p.m. (according to a source of mine) his locker had already been cleaned out. Was that decision made because Deaton had upheld what the board said? Was it simply a mutual agreement between Dixon and the basketball team? Was it a decision made by Haith that the Tigers couldn't afford the publicity of playing Dixon and the possibility (not saying it would have happened, but you have to acknowledge the chance) that another allegation might surface down the line after he had returned to the court? I don't know. But according to the information I received last night, the decision had already been made yesterday, prior to the release of the P-D story.

As for the final resolution, a transfer is best for all. Mike Dixon can go somewhere else without having been kicked off the Missouri team. The University isn't going to be open to any legal retaliation from Dixon because, officially, it was his choice to leave. So, in terms of getting past it and this story not turning into anything worse, this was the best way to handle it.

I understand many of you have questions as to who knew about the 2010 report and how much they knew and when they knew. I don't have answers to that. I can tell you that I had heard rumors of it over the past few months, but I did not have anything that I could report. At some point, I believe Mike Alden probably will have to address the question of just who knew and just how much they knew and how it figured into the decision to part ways with Dixon. But as of this morning, I don't have that answer.

Final point here, and one that I think everyone needs to understand: The burden of proof for breaking the law is different than the burden of proof for being a member of an organization. To get a conviction in a court, it would have to be proved beyond reasonable doubt that Dixon had done what he was accused of doing. But to be removed from the basketball team or the University, that same standard of proof does not exist. Those organizations can take the approach that while he didn't break the law, the consistent pattern of finding himself in bad situations both legally and academically did not reflect well upon the University or the basketball program and that it was best if Dixon was not a part of those organizations. You can argue whether that's fair or not, but organizations have a right to determine who they want to be part of those organizations. Just because he didn't break the law doesn't mean that Mike Dixon had carried himself in a manner that the basketball team or the University wanted continued association with him. And, again, officially, he wasn't kicked out. Officially, he chose to leave on his own.

In conclusion, again, I want to say that these stories are very difficult to cover. For weeks, you guys asked the media for details. We simply couldn't provide them. Even if we were told things by people we trusted, there is a standard of proof we have to have before we can start writing stories. Those standards were not met until the release of the first police report which happened on Tuesday. I have tried my best to keep my opinion out of this analysis. I simply am looking to provide the members of this site with as much information as I legally and ethically can to allow you to draw your own conclusions. I would ask that you do your best not to personally attack people on either side of this. It is unfortunate that anyone is involved in situations like this one (both Dixon and his accusers) and it is even more unfortunate that it all plays out in public. But it has. If there is any further reason to write stories or comment, we will do so. Otherwise, this is what I know and I'll leave it to you guys to discuss.

BRIAN AUSTIN ON BASKETBALL RECRUITING

I will start with a little more information from my conversation with Alex Etherington the other day. I got the sense talking with him that, although Rick Carter has been in contact with Etherington, that it was more of a check in than a priority recruiting call. Etherington said that they did not talk about visits, which it seems like they would if they were really interested. I will keep track of where things go with Etherington just in case, but I do not see it going anywhere right now.

A couple notes from coaches out on the road. Dave Leitao was in Massachusetts for the National Prep Showcase were one of Mizzou's top 2014 targets, Jaylen Brantley also played in the showcase.

A new name that we have come across for the class of 2014 is Trayvon Reed. A 6-foot-11 center from Shiloh HS in Snellville, Ga. Reed is an intriguing prospect. Reports are that he is still growing and expected to reach 7-foot-2. I am working to get a hold of Reed to see how Mizzou fits into his recruitment as soon as I can. His profile lists offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi from the SEC and other schools from the southeast.

Caught up with Larry Austin Jr. who told me his dad has been talking with Mizzou lately. Austin is focusing on the start of his season right now so he has not set up any visits yet for the time being. Austin said the other schools he is hearing from the most are Kansas St., Iowa, Oklahoma St., Illinois, Memphis, Tennessee, SMU, DePaul, and Wake Forest.

Also caught up with Isaac Copeland. He told me he has not heard from Mizzou in a while, but North Carolina, Georgetown, and Florida St. are showing a lot of interest lately.

Last thing Stevie Clark is making his announcement today and from everything we are hearing Mizzou is not going to be the choice.

PETE SCANTLEBURY ON FOOTBALL RECRUITING

It's the season for official visits, and Missouri's staff is already making a big splash by beginning to get some top recruits to schedule trips to Columbia. At this time of year, it's tough to "hold" things for the Chamber, so a lot of this will be re-hashing what we learned and posted this week.

This week, I'm basically going to run down the list of all the known recruits who are scheduling visits. Some of these guys are locked in to a certain weekend and some of these guys haven't decided on a date yet, but these are the recruits we know are seriously considering visiting:

-- Clarksville (TX) TE Gary Moorehttp://missouri.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=127975

-- Euless (TX) TE Jason Reesehttp://missouri.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=137220 (Arizona State commit)

-- Arvada (CO) OT Dan Skipperhttp://missouri.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=135177 (Tennessee commit)

-- ?Chamblee (GA) WDE Davin Bellamyhttp://missouri.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=135099 (Florida State commit)

-- Houston (TX) SDE Marcus Loudhttp://missouri.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=141214 (Colorado commit, former Mizzou commit)

-- Mesquite (TX) SDE Dimarya Mixonhttp://missouri.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=133165

-- Lee's Summit (MO) LB Nick Ramirezhttp://missouri.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=128792

-- Hutchinson C.C. (KS) DT Toby Johnsonhttp://missouri.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=132655

-- Hutchinson C.C. (KS) DT Ben Bradleyhttp://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/player-Ben-Bradley-137480

-- Bradenton (FL) DT Derrick Callowayhttp://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/player-Derrick-Calloway-130494

-- Peoria (IL) DT Josh Augustahttp://missouri.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=136219

-- Kansas City (MO) DT Maliek Collinshttp://missouri.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=143070

-- Glen Ellyn (IL) WDE Ruben Dunbarhttp://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Ruben-Dunbar-132351

Those are the big names out there right now. In addition, East Mississippi C.C. DE Za'Darius Smithhttp://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/player-Za'Darius-Smith-137048 is high on Missouri, but there hasn't been word if he'll schedule an official visit yet. Smith was supposed to visit Texas A&M recently, but instead visited Ole Miss for the Egg Bowl.

Also, Lovejoy (GA) TE Arshad Jacksonhttp://rivals.yahoo.com/missouri/football/recruiting/player-Arshad-Jackson-111345 MAY visit with Bellamy. Jackson is an Auburn commitment, but is friends with Bellamy. However, in my opinion, it's more likely that both Bellamy and Jackson end up at Florida State together.

This weekend, there are a few committed recruits visiting, including four-star St. Peters (MO) RB Chase Abbingtonhttp://rivals.yahoo.com/missouri/football/recruiting/player-Chase-Abbington-136014. There's been a lot of talk about Abbington's possible visit to LSU, but in talking with him, I don't think there's much to it. Abbington seemed surprise that the knowledge of him entertaining a visit to the Bayou got out there, and told me he wasn't even sure if he'll take it. I think, as others have said, it was more a trip for the sake of a trip (if that makes sense). That's always worrisome in the recruiting game, but now that the knowledge of that leaked out, I don't think he'll take one.

Next weekend is a big time for Missouri to solidify some of their long-time commitments. All of Missouri's offensive line commitments are visiting, including West Des Moines (IA) OT Jake Camposhttp://rivals.yahoo.com/missouri/football/recruiting/player-Jake-Campos-132050. Campos visited Iowa State officially last weekend, and told our Midwest analyst Josh Helmholdt that he's seriously considering the Cyclones. Obviously, he's familiar with Iowa State and has been there plenty of times. Missouri has a big thing going for it in that it gets the final visit. With the other offensive linemen in attendance, that could go a long way in solidifying Campos.

Also, Missouri City (TX) WR J'Mon Moorehttp://rivals.yahoo.com/missouri/football/recruiting/player-J'Mon-Moore-130283 is visiting next weekend. This summer, Moore said he would take other visits, but those haven't come to fruition. It looks more and more like Moore will stick with Missouri, and he's a very underrated recruit in my opinion. Moore had a great senior season, and is a solid get for what will likely be the only WR in this class.

I'll have a hot board for tomorrow, but I wanted to put my neck out there a bit with this prediction -- based on talking to four-star Bradenton (FL) DT Derrick Callowayhttp://rivals.yahoo.com/missouri/football/recruiting/player-Derrick-Calloway-130494, I think he commits to Missouri IF he visits next weekend. It looks like that visit will happen. Calloway seems like he's done with the recruiting process and wants to make a decision ASAP. Missouri gets first dibs, and that could be huge. That would also be the biggest pick-up of the SEC era, without a doubt.
