Auburn 3, Mississippi State 2. If you think Mississippi State made a good defensive play to get that safety, think again - the safety was awarded after an Auburn blocker was called for holding in their own end zone.
Auburn was in the middle of an attempted offensive shift from the smashmouth run game Tommy Tuberville favored to the Air Raid under new offensive coordinator Tony Franklin. Mississippi State, meanwhile, struggled for consistency on offense with head coach Sylvester Croom. A criticism of the time was that the Bulldogs offense was too complex, a byproduct of Croom's NFL coaching experiences.
Auburn offense: 315 yards, QB Chris Todd went 14-26 for 154 yards (Air Raid!)
Mississippi State offense: 116 yards (good lord), QB Wesley Carroll went 10-25 for 78 yards and an interception
