at a sandwich shop is pretty good compensation.

Four beloved, family-owned coffee and sandwich shops in Cambridge will be closing in the near future.

Steven and Isabel Darwin, co-founders of Darwin's Ltd., announced they will be retiring from the business after three decades...

...The closure comes a little more than a year after employees of Darwin's LTD announced their intent to form a union. The owners recognized the union and both sides were in the process of negotiating a contract when they reached this decision.

"We are disappointed the owner is closing, we’re trying to work with him to keep stores opened, and were shocked that he decided to close," said Warren Pepicelli, the joint board manager from the NEJB, which is representing Darwin's employees.

Pepicelli said the unionized employees were seeking $24 per hour wages, three weeks paid leave and health insurance with no deductibles.
