Nice article in the Athletic this morning about Andrew Paul. When they flashed his commitment graphic I was hoping he was a silent commit. But this is starting to feel more and more like the Josh Jacob’s recruitment.
“But to answer the question we’re all trying to figure out as Paul stacks offers while remaining outside of the top 1,000 players in the national rankings: Why?
Novakov doesn’t exactly know. He has a theory, though, and it starts in his office.
In late October, Mizzou running backs coach Curtis Luper visited Parish Episcopal. Luper met with Paul — while Paul looked at the collage of coaches in Novakov’s wall — and said something to the talented running back that changed everything. Luper told Paul that he was an SEC running back. Then after a short visit, Luper asked Paul to step out of the office so he could have a word with his coach.
Luper had a few final questions for Novakov: “What are we missing here? Why doesn’t this kid have other major offers? Is there anything we need to know? Should we actually issue him an offer?”
Novakov, being honest, said there was nothing that Luper needed to know. Paul got the offer that day.
“His game didn’t change,” Novakov changed. “He got confident. I think Coach Luper telling Andrew that got in his head. Then all of a sudden he became Bo Jackson. It was a totally different deal.”
Paul remembers the confidence Luper instilled in him.
“It was a big moment in my life,” Paul said.”
