Odom brought Scherer to thank him for everything he has done for Mizzou publicly. Said Scherer stopped by to help game plan for the week.
Haven't played well enough to win. Have to find a way to get some momentum. Defensively, one of the most disappointing parts is not tackling well and playing consistently. Played better at times last week, haven't played well together on both sides of the ball.
Good practice last night, still believes they have a chance to go get some wins. "They're hungry and want it as much as anything. I wish we had different results right now, but it's not."
Donavin Newsom didn't practice last night with strained quad. Probable for the South Carolina game. Now says they probably won't know more until Thursday.
So he'll either play or not play. Says Newsom hasn't ever been a vocal guy, but was very vocal Saturday night. "It means so much to him. It tore him up that he couldn't go play."
"He will if he can. If there's any chance, he'll be out there."
On lack of seniors/leadership: Offensively playing one senior, defensively there's more. Said that was a big reason he handled captains the way he did. Needed as many guys as possible to try to be leaders. Started meeting with the freshman class a couple weeks ago teaching leadership.
"It's uncomfortable sometimes for guys to be leaders...I need them to bring on a bunch of other guys. It's something I look forward to doing with those younger guys that will help us down the road for sure."
Hall/Gibson/Abeln all practiced last night.
On criticism: "I understand that comes with it. This job is very public as it should be. There are a lot of people that want Mizzou football to be really good. I lead the charge on that. I want us to be really good too."
Says he should come in and read some of the emails he gets. "I forever will use some of that stuff as motivation."
Said they've been using TJ Warren at that nickel linebacker position for four days, since Terez Hall got hurt. Said he thought Warren did a pretty good job against UK, considering that.
On offense Saturday: Early on, didn't play well. Inconsistent. "The thing that we probably struggled with the most was having the ability to run the ball."
On the defense: Balance of this year and last year. "Went back to majority of some of the things we had done last year. Very, very basic game plan." Said a lot of that had to do with Scherer not being out there. "I've got to do a great job teaching them this week."
That allowed older guys to help some of the younger guys who weren't experienced in last year's system.
Asked if he'd been as involved as he had planned to be defensively. "Probably not as much as I had anticipated." Since last week that has changed. Has put everything else aside to focus on that.
On Beisel: Loyal guy, has started on all special teams. He'll improve defensively as it goes along and he gets more time on the field. "He's a leader in the weight room, he's great in the meeting room. I love the kid."
Says he's talked to Mark Stoops and Derek Mason about being a first-time head coach in the SEC. "The profession's pretty amazing. Guys are willing to help guys out." Said he talked to Stoops on Saturday, who said he's in year four and he finally feels like he's got it figured out a little bit.
On Tanner Owen: Had a medical procedure. He's not in a position to be able to come back this year. Would be welcome back in future.
Nate Brown likely to redshirt at this point in time. Said he could basically line up and run a fly pattern every down, but that's about it. Can run, not ready to play football yet.
Beckner told him last week "I'm going to come back bigger and better than ever."
Asked if there was any time for big picture assessment figuring out what maybe should be done differently or if that has to wait till the offseason: Trying to evaluate every day what he could/should do differently. Encourages staff discussion and their opinions on what to do. "I just want to get it right and right now I'm not getting it right. I've got to find a way to get that done."
Said last week was Cam Hilton's best game of his career.
A year since the protests, asked if he's seen changes: Very close as a team. Without question, staff works on relationships every day. "I want our student athletes to have the greatest experience they can have at the University of Missouri. It will be more enjoyable for them when we win football games. But there's a lot more to being a student athlete than 3 to 630 on Saturday afternoons and I've got to hit it right in every area."
