RELEASE:

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Mizzou Baseball lost in walk-off fashion, 4-3, in 10 innings to open a three-game series at No. 1 Florida on Friday night (March 18) at McKethan Stadium. Peter Alonso hit a walk-off, bases loaded single in the 10th inning on a 3-2 pitch. Florida scored all four of its runs with two outs Friday night. Florida goes to 19-1 on the year and Mizzou falls to 14-7.

Mizzou tied the game in the ninth inning on a Jake Ring (Ingleside, Ill.) single and nearly took a lead on a ball smoked to deep center by Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) in the next at bat, but it was run down for the third out. Mizzou eventually fell in extras despite the heroics in the ninth. Senior Zach Lavy (Auxvasse, Mo.) turned in a three-hit night to lead the offense and that backed a masterful start from Reggie McClain (Duluth, Ga.).

McClain was tagged for three runs (two earned) in the first inning, but settled in and pitched 9.0 innings, scattering just nine hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. Four of his nine hits and all three runs came in the first. He struck out seven over the final eight innings. He has not walked a batter in 16.0 consecutive innings and has just one walk in 40.2 innings this season.

Mizzou had a chance to get to Shore early as leadoff hitter Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.) worked a nine-pitch at-bat and roped a single up the middle after falling behind, 0-2. SS Ryan Howard (St. Charles, Mo.) then reached base on an error, but Shore struck out the next three batters swinging at Mizzou stranded a pair.

The Gators then took advantage of a pair of two-out hits to score three runs off of McClain in the bottom half of the first to take a 3-0 lead after one. After a busy first inning for each starter, they both settled in. Shore retired 10 straight batters before a two-out triple off the wall in deep center field by Lavy snapped that streak. Shane Benes (Town & Country, Mo.) then singled him in to cut into the Gator lead.

Lavy was then in the middle of another Tiger rally in the sixth. He ripped an RBI single into right field to scoreTrey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) who ripped his sixth double of the year in the previous at-bat to knock Shore out of the game.

Mizzou nearly tied the game in the seventh, putting two men aboard, but Harris grounded out 6-3 to end the threat. Lavy then led off the eighth with a single up the middle, his third hit of the game, to put the tying run on base. Benes then struck out and Lavy was caught stealing for out No. 2. DH Brian Sharp (Liberty, Mo.) then struck out swinging to end the frame.

McClain went back out for the bottom of the eighth and worked around a two-out double and a wild pitch to strand a runner on third. Mizzou then got a runner aboard in the ninth as Ian Nelson (St. Louis, Mo.) was hit by a pitch with one out. Brumfield struck out and that brought Howard to the plate who tallied an infield single to the left side. Jake Ring (Ingleside, Ill.) then lined one into left to score the tying run from second. Harris almost put Mizzou up with a deep drive to center, but Buddy Reed tracked it down for out No. 3.

Tim Jamieson sent McClain back out for the ninth and he pitched around a two-out single by Mike Rivera to send the game to extra innings. Sharp came on in the 10th inning to relieve McClain, who was masterful over his final 8.0 innings, striking out seven and walking none while scattering just five hits.

Mizzou and No. 1 Florida will resume their series tomorrow at 6 p.m. (CT) as Team USA teammates Tanner Houck (Collinsville, Ill.) and Florida LHP A.J. Puk will get the starts. The game will air live on SEC Network+ and Tex Little and Trevor Coleman will have the call on KTGR 1005. FM. Hear From Mizzou
Head Coach Tim Jamieson

Opening Statement…“I am real pleased with the kids’ effort and how we focused, particularly after the first inning after we fell behind by three and Reggie looks like he doesn’t have his best stuff. But we found a way to get back into the game and Trey puts together a great at-bat after we tie it up in the ninth. We drive those two runs in and we win the game.”

On the team’s ability to push the game to extras and nearly win...“Well we took their best shot. We saw all of their best relievers and saw their best starter and had a chance to win the 10th inning.
