I've been seeing stories on the internet recently about the legendary Dunbar poets team out of Baltimore from the 1980s that featured Mugsy Bogues and several other players that played at G'town or D1 and it made me start thinking about great MO HS teams during my lifetime.
I don't pretend to know a lot about teams out of the KC Metro but thought I'd start a discussion by listing a few I would nominate.....let's limit this to public schools only.
1976 Center undeated state champions. Featured Doug Ommen who spent some time at Mizzou at center and twins Mick and Rick Allison in the backcourt.
1977 Ray-South team that had future UCM star Bill Fennelly along with Kevin Fromm(Memphis) and Larry Frevert(TCU).
1979 KC Central state champs coached by the legendary Jack Bush and led by future Tiger Michael Walker.
1990 Ray-South team that was a 31-0 state champ led by coach Bud Lathrop and future Tiger Jevon Crudup.
1998 Liberty Bluejays who finished undefeated at 31-0 and were led by future Tiger Matt Rowan and future Stanford Cardinal Nick Robinson.
I would also throw out one of the best KC teams I've ever seen that didn't win a state title...the 1995 Raytown Bluejays led by Tyronn Lue, Terry Nooner and Cortez Groves. They lost that epic game to Derek Hood and KC Central in the state quarters at Municipal Auditorium.
I know I'm forgetting some obvious choices but it's fun discussion. What other public schools around the state should be considered?
