This loss occurred in the 29th game of the season, not the last game of the season. There were about 20 different decisions Gates could have made to help his team win, but he didn't. There were players that could have played better but they didn't. I just hope they learned a lot of lessons about finishing an opponent when they have the chance, and that Gates identifies a perimeter defender that can keep people from getting into the paint. The short bench today made no sense. If no one wants to play defense on Manon, slap Allen or Barrett on him for a while. And for cripes sake if your 7'5" unicorn is healthy to play, get him in there to grab some rebounds.

Why didn’t Shaw get any run today? He isn’t skilled but at least he brings energy

When will people stop saying they hope they learned from the loss? You've lost close games to Illinois, Tennessee, A&M, and now Vandy. How many more losses will it take to learn how to win? You're running out of games and soon it's one and done.

And Arkansas. Same/similar issues all around: Part of our defensive problem is style (overplaying zone, leaving open lanes to the basket and open threes), a lot of it is just really poor positioning (will SOMOENE cut off the baseline on a drive? Or block anyone out?) and last is hustle/desire (need urgency getting to shooters). Fixable, but repeated errors points to coaching.

Of all the complaints one could reasonably have about yesterday’s game, Shaw not getting enough playing time should not be one of them.

Never. I will never lose hope. We’re not the undefeated Indiana team, but we have a shooters chance against anybody. Thanks for visiting to espouse your grim prediction. You PM guys are a miserable lot.

The loss yesterday stung more than some others…but surprised by the reaction by some here. Probably shouldn’t be surprised…. This is still a good ….very good team. The sky isn’t falling. They are very well coached. This is not a perfect team…and while they can be a final four team….that would involve beating more talented teams.

this is my opinion, its like when the football team lost all those close ones…then won most the last 2 years..it becomes a trend that is tough to change in season

good team for sure…final 4 would be a shocker…1) never happened..2) lots of weak spots (int defense, overall shooting, ft misses, lackadaisical passing)…any one occurs and can be a downfall

This is the take I’ve been waiting for as people calmed down a bit.

Last night’s loss sucks because of how it happened, but it doesn’t make how people felt about the team two days ago irrelevant. All the good stuff we’ve said about the team this season is still true.

There are flaws, pretty big ones, and recently teams have figured out how to attack them. Now it’s a question of how Gates and the staff adjust to the new way they are being attacked.

With success comes scrutiny. We have all invested more in this team than we did last year and because of that, we're paying more attention to our flaws. I am most disappointed in yesterday's loss than any other this season because while Vanderbilt is a good to very good team, it was obvious we were the more skilled squad. They just beat us with effort to stay in the game in the first half. Manon is a fine player I guess, but he was everywhere. He killed us with superior effort. No excuse for that IMO. We have too many bodies to not find someone that will match/exceed his energy.

Gates correctly sat Perkins for most of the game because he was giving us nothing. But how he couldn't see that Pierce had about five backbreaking mistakes (not even including the falling asleep on Nickel with three seconds left), and chain him to the bench in the second half is mindboggling. Again, we have too many bodies over there to not find someone else. Shaw is a low skill, high energy guy. We were getting killed by a low skill, high energy guy in Manon. I don't believe Shaw checked in once the entire game. Allen didn't play either.

And then they outexecuted and outcoached us in the last two minutes. No excuse for not fouling up three under eight seconds. But I know some coaches don't like to foul up three for some reason. And if Dennis is one of those guys, fine I guess I'll have to live with that. BUT, if you're not going to foul, there's absolutely no excuse for not preparing your defense to hug Nickel and allow a meaningless drive to the basket under five seconds left. Again, that's not preparing your team. And if he did prepare the team and Pierce made a mistake, then it's his fault for putting a poor defender on their best shooter.

And for the record, I absolutely love Dennis. I realize I'm picking nits here. He has engineered the best single-season turnaround in major college basketball, but that doesn't mean his infallible. I love Andy Reid like a second father, but he still effs up clock management, end of half management, coaches challenges, etc all the time.

And as many have said in this thread, I hope he learns from these mistakes and we grow. The arrow is still most definitely pointing up, but elite teams win that game yesterday. We were up six with 90 seconds left. Most teams win that game, actually, not even elite teams. I think we can be elite offensively, but our defense and rebounding is a little concerning as the calendar continues to get deeper into March.

What grim prediction? It's time to stop losing close games and live up to the talent they have and the heightened expectations.

This team is a very good team offensively, but every single guy other than Ant Robinson has significant holes definsively. It's a talent (i.e. some guys just aren't quick enough, others aren't strong enough and few just don't play D the way they should given their athleticism) issue imo and every coach in the SEC is capable of exposing those issues. I suspect their will be some upgrades made in the portal to fix that for next year. We shall see and still have the potential to have a great run in the tournament--really excited about the tradjectory of the program and the staff in general, but that doesn't change how frustrating the game was yesterday obviously.

My expectations/hopes for this team dropped yesterday from possible elite 8 team to ‘lucky to make out of the first weekend’. There has been enough time to address the lack of defense/depending on >50% 3 point shooting to make adjustments and it hasn't happened. At this point it isnt going to, so this team will go as far as their shooting percent will take them. Which, in the tournament wont be very far. See 2012. Hope i am wrong, but don't say you weren't warned.

It’s one game. It stung because it was given away. With that said…it happens when there is this fine line between winning and losing because everyone is good. As for the tournament…unless you are the 2024 UConn team that is just superior…it is a crap shoot. Have to judge basketball teams over the entire season…not one game and not the ncaa tournament. I do hope the ball will bounce our way one time before I am too old to care or before I die.

It isn't just one game... it is Vandy, Arkansas, Tenn, Memphis. Opposing coaches know the formula for beating MU now and the MU coaches have to adjust or it will be a short NCAA tournament. When MU can shoot > 50% from the floor (including from 3) they can beat anyone. When they don't, against a good team it's over. Some games they just haven't played well. Others, it is the 2nd half collapse that keeps happening...

Memphis - led at the half 42-32 then gave up 51 in 2nd half
Tenn - led 34-28 at the half then gave up 57 in 2nd
Ark - ahead 48-41 at half then gave up 51 in 2nd
Vandy - led 38-29 at half then gave up 52 in 2nd.

You are right…it was 4 games.
