I think this thing had been attempted to be propped up almost exclusively by transfers for too long. Hopefully this year's freshmen can develop and combine with next year's haul to finally form that core. Then the portal can be used to tweak where needed, and not have every year be a make or break experiment in cobbling spare parts together and hoping it works.
