It doesn't have to be pretty. It just has to be a win.
There are better players than Jeremiah Tilmon. There can't be a whole lot of them that are more important to their team. He wasn't quite Daniel Gafford's equal tonight, but he was close enough for his supporting cast to make up the difference. Fantastic game (and post-game interview) from the big man.
Before both of Ronnie Suggs' big shots--literally seconds before--I turned to the guys next to me and said "Ronnie Suggs in the game here?" Oh, ye of little faith. The kid was huge tonight. They don't win without him. And it tells you everything you need to know what Cuonzo Martin thinks of him that he subbed Suggs into the game for the final defensive possession. Without that move, Missouri might not win. I knew there was a reason I wasn't a Division One basketball coach.
I know we like to complain about officiating here on the good old Internet. I thought there were some bad calls throughout the game as there will be in any game. But they let them play. It was a physical game and that helps Missouri. Xavier Pinson said he committed the foul with 10 seconds left (Pinson was great tonight by the way, other than that foul). Jeremiah Tilmon said he thought he fouled Jalen Harris on the final possession. And somebody should have Jordan Geist teach an acting class, cause that dude gets the refs to blow some whistles when it looks like he has absolutely nowhere to go.
Other than the last defensive stop, I thought the biggest play of the game was Kevin Puryear's pass to Tilmon for a dunk to push the lead to four. Puryear, as I wrote, took his coach's challenge after the last game and responded. Good for him.
Not a season-changing win by any means, but a good one to get. They're at Ole Miss on Saturday and the Rebels have cooled off. They might get Mark Smith back so who knows?
Best line of the night goes to Cuonzo Martin.
