After playing for Dan Devine at Mizzou, Gary Barnett started his coaching career as a grad assistant under Al Onofrio at his alma mater. The Parkway Central grad went on to be the head coach at Northwestern University and the University of Colorado.
On Tuesday, Barnett returned to his home state for a visit with the Tiger Club of Kansas City.
Barnett was a wide receiver for Coach Devine at Mizzou from 1966-69. After a GA stint with the Tigers, he headed to Colorado where he became a high school and small-college coach, and an assistant for fellow Mizzou alum Bill McCartney at the University of Colorado. He then spent eight seasons at the helm at Northwestern University before returning to Colorado as the head coach in Boulder.
Now entering his fourth season as the color analyst on CU radio broadcasts, Barnett was inducted into the Northwestern Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2018 and the Colorado Buffaloes Athletics Hall of Fame this year.
