Our moderator has mentioned a lot about the buyout clause with other coaches in the SEC, and how HCBO is at the bottom of the list.
Good for Mizzou.
As an economist, I can't think of a bigger disincentive in a contract than a low yearly income with a huge buyout clause. The entire industry has lost its mind with these ridiculous contracts and frankly, they aren't necessary. Do you think Auburn would redo their contract with Malzahn if they could right now? Don't make the same mistake.
A coaches pay is meant to be an incentive for the coach, not a bargaining chip.
Odom deserves a new contract. He's been out coached a few times, but that doesn't make him a bad coach. I don't know if he's the long term answer, and if he keeps blowing games like KY and uSC, he's definitely not. But he has put us in position to win, and that's what Mizzou fans want.
When it comes to his contract, I would pay him a bunch of money on an annual basis, most of it incentive based (ie, get to a bowl, grad rates, division title, don't go to jail, etc) and keep the buyout low. Give him 3.5-4 million for a few years, but if he proves he can't coach, Mizzou's decision isn't affected by the financial impact of the transaction.
