BIDEN TO ISSUE GUN CONTROL ORDERS TOMORROW
by Kevin Ryan
Details are emerging of the gun control orders that President Biden will sign tomorrow. He says they are the “initial set of actions” that his administration will take on restricting firearms. They include:
• Creation of “Red flag” law
Biden will order the Justice Department to create “red flag” legislation within 60 days, that states can pass to authorize the government to remove firearms from someone they say is a danger.
• “Ghost Guns”
Biden is expected to use executive action to require background checks for the purchase of parts that people can use to assemble their own firearms. Homemade firearms are legal, but have attracted negative press because they can be more difficult for the government to track, resulting in gun control advocates calling them “ghost guns”. Biden will direct the DOJ to issue a new rule to “rein in” these firearms within 30 days, but offered no details on the content of the rule.
• Stabilizing braces
The Justice Department will designate pistols used with stabilizing braces as short-barreled rifles, which, under the National Firearms Act, require a federal license to own and are subject to a strict application process and $200 tax.
• Firearm tracking initiative
The government will begin compiling more data on “firearms trafficking,” something Biden says hasn’t been done in over two decades.
• Nominate a gun control advocate to head the ATF
Biden will nominate staunch gun control activist David Chipman to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). Chipman is a senior policy adviser with “Giffords”, a gun control advocacy group named for Gabby Giffords. Chipman has spent considerable effort pushing for greater regulation of firearms and enforcement of gun control. His nomination is certain to win praise from gun control advocates.
Administration officials also hinted that there is more gun control to come, both as executive orders and legislation, calling tomorrow’s actions “initial steps”.
