Get credit for all of the wins this year…including the wins v Alabama and Florida? Did he out coach the Florida coach at Florida when they won?
yes i think he did, thats why he was top 10 for coy, but ya get the criticism when you do whatever he did yesterday. by the way go back and watch that and let me know if you see any off the ball screens or back cuts all day..was just 5 guys wandering aimlesslyGet credit for all of the wins this year…including the wins v Alabama and Florida? My favorite was when two guys would repeatedly come to set a ball screen for no apparent reason.yes i think he did, thats why he was top 10 for coy, but ya get the criticism when you do whatever he did yesterday. by the way go back and watch that and let me know if you see any off the ball screens or back cuts all day..was just 5 guys wandering aimlessly
I agree with this statement. But there are posters that are saying he is a terrible coach. He isn’t terrible every game…just in those his team loses. I think even he would agree with that.Sure. Just as he gets to wear the clown suit from last night. Kind of what happens when you’re paid the salary he’s paid
I saw the same thing that happens every game with virtually every team. When they couldn’t make shots….there were a lot less driving lanes or opportunities to make back cuts or go back door successfully. Tends to happen when they aren’t worried about shots. By the second half…they were giving Grill room to shoot.yes i think he did, thats why he was top 10 for coy, but ya get the criticism when you do whatever he did yesterday. by the way go back and watch that and let me know if you see any off the ball screens or back cuts all day..was just 5 guys wandering aimlessly
NCAA Tournament games matter more than regular season games.I agree with this statement. But there are posters that are saying he is a terrible coach. He isn’t terrible every game…just in those his team loses. I think even he would agree with that.
Matter more? But that has nothing to do with coaching. Coaches prepare for all games. It is still one game within an entire season. No such thing as a coach being better or worse just because it is regular season or tournament. Coach K lost to a 15 seed. The coach from Virginia lost to a 16 seed and the next year won it all. But carry on…your emotion is just part of being a fan. I suffer from the same problem.NCAA Tournament games matter more than regular season games.
College basketball is all about the NCAA Tournament. Most don’t watch the regular season.
Gates put on the clown suit when it really mattered.
Overall he really isn’t very good. He’s much more of the coach from last year than the first half of this one. He had no answers for the post Alabama tailspin this squad was inI agree with this statement. But there are posters that are saying he is a terrible coach. I think if he gets the talent…he is pretty good. Last year…j he is talent was pretty sorry. I guess we will have to wait and see. … 2 of the 3 years he has seemed pretty good.Overall he really isn’t very good. He’s much more of the coach from last year than the first half of this one. For the most part I agree with you. Gates is a good coach, and he has shown they he can coach guys up, and create a system where they can flourish. I appreciate that. I also like the free flowing offense and what seems to be a tenacious defense when they are executing.I think if he gets the talent…he is pretty good. Last year…j he is talent was pretty sorry. I guess we will have to wait and see. … 2 of the 3 years he has seemed pretty good.
I’m running out of time, Mel. Have been watching Mizzou since “69–I don’t have many seasons left.I think if he gets the talent…he is pretty good. Last year…j he is talent was pretty sorry. I guess we will have to wait and see. … 2 of the 3 years he has seemed pretty good.
I like Dennis. I think he is a calming influence and that is important in a coach. He recruits pretty well. He plays an entertaining style and doesn’t seem like an ahole. But he has a limit if he doesn’t start valuing defense and rebounding more.I think if he gets the talent…he is pretty good. Last year…j he is talent was pretty sorry. I guess we will have to wait and see. … 2 of the 3 years he has seemed pretty good.
I get your frustration.. but there are 2 things that we need to keep in mind.I just am frustrated because I truly think we had a coaching prodigy in our backyard and we are going to miss out on him. I understand why we didn’t or couldn’t hire him, it’s just frustrating. The administration should be in the get it right business, not “make a mistake but have defendable reasons for doing so” business
My only counters to that are 1) We could have paid him enough to be interested if we would have (correctly IMO) identified him as a coach that would succeed at Mizzou. Money talks. Bullshit walks. Sure it’s hindsight to some extent for McCollum, but we gave Gates and Drink huge raises to get them to leave lower levels.I get your frustration.. but there are 2 things that we need to keep in mind.
1) As @SandiaTiger mentioned, the noise was that he was not interested in Mizzou when the spot was open. Did it he see it as too unstable? Or was he not interested in this level and the difference between coaching at low level and high level? We don't know... but it seemed to be more than just Mizzou not taking a shot.
2) What works at D2, or even low level D1 schools, is not always translatable to life in the SEC (or B10 or ACC or B12). As I mentioned... Army's style in football would not work in the SEC.
Same dog bit me. Been watching since Norm’s first year. I was young…but a local basketball star was Norm’s best player…before John Brown became his best…and not many years left for me as well. But Inalso know the tournament is random…and the coach is important in getting there…but the one and done is mostly the bounce of the ball unless you are just a truly dominant team talent wise. Just wish it would bounce our way once very soon.I’m running out of time, Mel. Have been watching Mizzou since “69–I don’t have many seasons left.

agree..does his style work with high major spoiled brat players? does not seem like high major kids wanna play defense and play an offense that isnt dribble till your are open and if you dont get open shoot anywayI get your frustration.. but there are 2 things that we need to keep in mind.

@doya gave my answer (more or less) for #2 above. My only counters to that are 1) We could have paid him enough to be interested if we would have (correctly IMO) identified him as a coach that would succeed at Mizzou. Money talks. Bullshit walks. Sure it’s hindsight to some extent for McCollum, but we gave Gates and Drink huge raises to get them to leave lower levels.
2) I would obviously McCollum to recruit at a higher level than he did at NMSU or Drake. But if he could get bigger level recruits to buy in to what he’s trying to accomplish, the sky could be the limit. Every coach has to recruit a higher level of athlete the higher up the ladder you go. What I’ve seen out of watching McCollum semi closely over the past 15 years is a guy that gets his teams to play smarter and tougher than their opponents to a damn near 90 percent winning percentage. That’s not an accident. Maybe his style wouldn’t translate to the SEC, but to me it would have been worth the gamble.
And again, I understand the KA disaster made it virtually impossible to hire him when we hired Gates. But not completely impossible. And I fear this is going to be Quin instead of Self v. 2.0. Quin was fine, good even. But we had great within our grasp and spit the bit.
The backup always looks better. I am sure he is really good. But eventually he loses a he shouldn’t lose and we realize he isn’t perfect. …and we wish we had hired someone else.My only counters to that are 1) We could have paid him enough to be interested if we would have (correctly IMO) identified him as a coach that would succeed at Mizzou. What a shitty coaching job by Pitino today--unreal.The backup always looks better. I am sure he is really good. But eventually he loses a he shouldn’t lose and we realize he isn’t perfect. …and we wish we had hired someone else.
Arkansas is really talented. Top -0 preseason based on that talent. They under achieved all year. Now they look great. Did Calipari get smarter? Did he just do a poor job all season but get great in the last two games? No one would trade the hogs roster first Missouri’s….I think his biggest issue is consistency. As we all have said he is a great recruiter. Sometimes that talent wins games in spite of coaching. Other times, especially when you play an equally ormore talented team or one with superior coaching, like yesterday, it won't. I'll use Arkansas as an example, they really are not a very talented team. We beat them at home then went down there and lost. They both looked terrible and the less crappy team won that day. Cal has won two upsets now including against a much more talented St. John's team with a Hall of Fame coach. He has put his players in a position to succeed and they have to this point. Gates doesn't always do that and when he doesn't it's really obvious, like yesterday and a few other obvious times this season. He'll win 10-15 games with regularity because of the talent he recruits. I don't think anyone on here will be satisfied with that. I'd like to see him get an x's and o's guy on the bench with him, if he doesn't already have one and let him handle the game plan.
You don't think AR is talented? Wow is all I can say to that. They have way more talent than we do. We had some decent players, but no comparison to AR imo. Cal underachieved all year with his talent and the Boogie Fland (rated a top 25 recruit by everyone) injury hurt, but it just wasn't working well early on, but because he is a HOF coach they got it figured out. Ivisic, Thiero and Wagner came with him from KY, Aidoo from TN and Johnell Davis from FAU was one of most coveted portal guys--ranked 3rd in ON3--too high obviously, but still that is where he was ranked. Aidoo was 10th, Wagner 56th, Thiero was 99th and Ivisic was 107. Mitchell was 35th, Perkins 70th and Warrick was 103. In addition, their freshman class was ranked 5th on rivals and ours was 6th.I think his biggest issue is consistency. As we all have said he is a great recruiter. I don't disagree with that, but they have a lot of talent--notbably more than we do. Obviously that isn't everything as Drake doesn't have that much, but they play really well obviously.I thought they looked like crap both times against us. Saw them twice more and they didn’t look good either time. Didn’t see Boogie play but wasn’t impressed with them the times I saw them.
Last season his best players were hurt and really didn’t help…tonje and grill and others …can’t blame him for last season…I think if he gets the talent…he is pretty good. Last year…j he is talent was pretty sorry. I guess we will have to wait and see. … 2 of the 3 years he has seemed pretty good.
I think the real key for Gates is figuring out the last 7 games or so... what happened and why, and how do you fix it. While we as fans would love an answer... it is more important that he knows and does something about it. Personally, if he does that and never says what the problem is, I am good with it. This year was heads and shoulders better than last year. He's got talent (let's see if anyone hits the portal) and I believe he owns the locker room... close the season better next year and advance in the dance, and I think most people will be very happy. NOT some on this board... but most normal people who don't traffic on internet sites. ;-)Last season his best players were hurt and really didn’t help…tonje and grill and others …can’t blame him for last season…
Seems like we got exhausted and lost our energy in the last 7 games after the win against Alabama…
Without Mitchell being 100 percent we did almost come back…
Stop acting like everything has been great the last three years other than the last few games.I think the real key for Gates is figuring out the last 7 games or so... what happened and why, and how do you fix it. Two years look like Haith.Stop acting like everything has been great the last three years other than the last few games.
Year one we had a chance to go to the S16 and got run off the floor by Princeton. Year two he went 0-18 - zero and freakin 18 - after a couple injuries. Year three was looking good and then we collapsed with a season-ending loss to a D2 team.
You may think this is fine but I bet most Mizzou fans don’t agree. Gates’ track record thus far looks a lot like Haith/Cuonzo.
If you judge themI thought they looked like crap both times against us. Saw them twice more and they didn’t look good either time. Didn’t see Boogie play but wasn’t impressed with them the times I saw them.
Golden at FL is doing a real crappy job today! If you judge them
Like the posters here judge Missouri….they looked like crap because Calipari is not a good coach…or at least he wasn’t before this weekend.
