He’s a fine QB.
- Good in short to intermediate( like very good)
- True Dual Threat
BUT 1 of 2 things need to happen:
1. He has to take 5-7 deep shots(preferably out of a play action look) a game. Our running game is designed to run over you not confuse you. If you don’t threaten teams deep they will just stack the box and you can’t beat the numbers.
I see a lot of influence from Dooley’s time in Dallas. Namely 12 personnel(2 TE) and relying on the running game.
Drew Lock masked a lot of that with all of the deep shots he took. It’s a lot easier to score on 5-7 play drives than 11-12 play drives. The more plays you run the more opportunity for mistakes(3 turnovers)
2. They add more misdirection into the running game. Right now Dooley has neutered Rountree. 1 defender has no chance. 3...different story. Runs aren’t that hard to defend when you have an extra defender in the box OR you don’t give me something else to think about. If your not going to go deep the run game should look a lot more like Wyoming’s. Plays were simple but we couldn’t line up right to save our life because of the formations and motion.
The thing that gave me pause with KB here was always the fact that, you CANT just work within a compressed field if you don’t have significantly better athletes than everyone else. They had that at Clemson. Lining up with 3 TE on the Goal line and thinking you’re going to run power right at a defense is the definition of arrogant. (I mean so arrogant that if I was a HC I would tell my OC if I ever see it I would make sure his office was packed by the time the game was over.)
I think Mizzou will be ok and I do think Dooley will figure it out but, he has to realize “pro style” works when you have “pro style” players. Please don’t take that as a shot at KB either. Im simply saying professional football and college football are 2 totally different games.
