Look I’m in the optimistic camp regarding Gates. Whether I’m right or the horrible hire camp is right remains to be seen. All 4 final candidates had pros and cons. Here is what impresses me about DRF.

The easy nostalgic hire would have been Kim. Most the fan base would have been happy, and she’s probably not on the hot seat if he didn’t work out. If my main goal is to win the “hire” knowing an Altman or other P5 coach isn’t available then Kimmie is the east choice. Clearly DRF knew what the response from fans would be if she went this route.

Yet she is the one that actually interviewed the candidates. She is the one who had to do what she thinks is best for the program long term and not just win a press conference. Considering she had more information and insight in each of these candidates than all of us do, AND she went with the less immediately popular hire in Gates, then clearly she saw something in him that determined the hire over Kim.

Right or wrong she deserves the benefit of the doubt on making the best decision she could and I hope she’s right. Again, clearly she didn’t push the easy button on this one.
