1. Gates took a ragtag group of dudes to 25 wins and the second round;
2. He fortunately inherited Kobe Brown, but also brought D’Moi with him — two g-league level guys;
3. He landed a star in Mosley who ended up contributing less than expected;
4. He took a ragtag group of dudes at Cleveland State to the tourney;
5. This team is possibly the worst team of my lifetime, and I ain’t young;
6. There have been injuries: Tonje, Grill;
7. He overestimated his roster over the summer.
You have to consider all of that, not just the last 10 or so games. This season my be a reflection of just how far the program had sunk and last year was a band-aid. Next year could also be tough, as the best players will be freshman Boateng and Myers. Time will tell, and hopefully he has at least next year and probably 25-26.
In the meantime, I’m fully checked out — not an unusual place for me with Mizzou hoops in the last 20 years: periods of interest followed by seasons of apathy.
