1. Gotta say the clock mgmt wasn’t great at the end. Second down at the 17, a screen pass to Young goes for 11. Play starts with 1:30 left. Clock restarts after resetting the chains, and they snap it with 1:20 left. 1:20! When they could’ve burned another 25-30 seconds. Then they throw on first down. Incomplete. So instead of taking the clock down to 45-50 seconds, there’s 1:16 left and Army still hasn’t had to burn one of its two timeouts. Then the TD on second down, but Army now has 1:11 left and two timeouts.
You absolutely have to run down the clock before snapping on first down. And then you have to run it. Maybe you score. In any event the clock is down to 45 seconds. If you don’t score, Army is down to one timeout. Then run it again. They had four plays to make 6 yards. They treated the clock and the play-calling like there were 20 seconds left.
What was the rush?
2. Saw a lot to like from Cook. There’s something to build on. Kid has some moxie.
3. Hated the fourth-and-a-foot play call. Go straight ahead. Paging Mr. Cox. And never mind that Cook would still be running had he kept the ball. The weak-side DE crashed down hard. Not a single defender on that side of the field.
4. I guess it’s fitting the Army kicker got the game MVP. Snubbed by the Groza voters, Mevis makes three more FGs and has to watch the other guy celebrate. I met his parents at a pregame tailgate. Had just arrived after driving two days from Indiana. They are jumping in the car tomorrow and headed to Orlando for the Iowa State game. Gonna be a long drive.
