One of the issues of scheduling that I have not seen discussed is the issue of essentially adding another loss to the middle and lower tier teams in the SEC. This is not good for the overall financial health of the SEC. The SEC needs to maximize the number of teams that get to play in bowl games to keep up fan interest and for economic reasons as playing in the bowl games adds revenue. It also allows for more practices and sets up the team for success the next season. So for teams like Mizzou, Kentucky, etc. the SEC needs these teams to be in bowl games. If you add another SEC conference game and keep the requirement to play another P5 school, that only allows 2 games against lesser schools. If you then only win 3 SEC conference games, you now do not qualify for a bowl game. The fans become disinterested due to the constant losing seasons and the overall revenue for the SEC suffers.
So my thinking is that they need to find a solution that keeps the current 8 SEC games and keep the P5 game. It is important for teams like Mizzou to play teams like Illinois, K State, Nebraska, etc for fan interest and also for good games for the SEC network.
