"As we sit here right now, seven weeks in, I would pick Florida to win the East," Herbstreit said.

He made the Gators (6-1, 3-1) his pick despite the team's 42-28 loss at LSU.

Herbstreit also mentioned Missouri (5-1, 2-0), which currently sits atop the division. While the Tigers are likely to be favored in each of their next two games Saturday against Vanderbilt and Oct. 26 vs. Kentucky, they have a tough road there as a potential one-loss showdown Nov. 9 at the Bulldogs and then another tough matchup Nov. 16 with Florida looms.

"I think Missouri's still a factor," Herbstreit said. "They have done a heck of a job. I know they had a devastating (pectoral) injury to (senior middle linebacker) Cale Garrett. He's a great player, been the heart and soul of that defense. We'll see how that affects them. (Fourth-year head coach) Barry Odom's been an excellent defensive mind as a head coach.

"But as we look down the stretch of games — they've got Vandy, they've got Kentucky and then they've got a bye and then they go to Athens. And you're sitting there at 7-1 after losing to Wyoming (37-31, Aug. 31) and having a little egg on your face and having everybody thinking, 'Ah, so much for Missouri,' give them credit with (Clemson graduate transfer quarterback) Kelly Bryant. He's settled back in.

"Big win over Ole Miss (38-27, Saturday). You would expect them to be able to take care of Vandy and Kentucky, and then it's showdown — back-to-back weeks — where they go to Athens and then get Florida at home."
