We gave up 500+ yds. passing and Blough was slicing through our secondary like Swiss cheese.
That said, on first watch I thought Sparks and Holmes played fairly well. Oliver too. Cam in coverage wasn’t as bad as I’m sure the thread about him last night indicates (didnt read it.)
Petry wasn’t ready to go on that 1st series. If he was ready to go, Brohm took advantage of what he saw on film. The 1st three plays, Brohm attacked him directly and went 3 for 3. Petry’s gotta learn from that and stay more disciplined in HIS responsibilities. Young players want to make every play and they have to understand every play isn’t theirs to make.
For the LB’s, I would love to see the “All 22” because I cant confidently say that they played poorly. I will say that they were nowhere to be found in the passing game and it “feels” like they played poorly. All of those deep ins, 5-7 yd crossing routes, etc...those are taken away by being in the right spot. Blough shouldn’t have even thought about throwing some of those balls if they were where they were supposed to be.
Now to what I feel is the biggest problem. Edge Pressure is non-existent. It looked like Chris Turner was running in place last night. I didn’t notice Tre Williams or Nate Anderson as much but, that says something in itself. Pressure from the DT’s was actually pretty solid. Beckner had himself a game last night. In fact, Turner’s sack was a product of Beckner’s penetration. That said, If you can’t heat the QB up and make him feel like somebody is about to destroy him on every play, it becomes 7 on 7 for these guys. Here is something else people don’t realize...even if the QB scrambles and gets 3- 5 yds. a couple of times, he starts to fatigue just like every other player. His legs start to go a little bit. He’s not quite as accurate. He doesnt have quite as much zip on his passes. So now he’s thinking about what’s coming and he’s getting tired. Pressure busts pipes.
In summary: I wasn’t in love with the game plan. You’re not going to have 7-8 freak athletes running around your secondary like a Bama, OSU, Clemson, etc. I don’t think you should have necessarily blitzed him but I would have definitely gotten away from that 3 man rush and rushed 4. Mizzou HAS to get some pressure. The game plan is fixable though. Brohm reminds me a lot of Kevin Wilson (wizard on the offensive side of the ball) and we allowed his QB to get comfortable and then hot. Lastly, put your cup on Mizzou fans. You cant put a performance like that on film and not expect Georgia to take quite a bit of what Purdue did.
I’m extremely uncomfortable regarding next week.
