The decision Drink made to punt is smart…for this offense. For a functioning football team, you obviously go for it. That said, you have to consider the team and playcalling. If Drink says to go for it, what would’ve happened? Mizzou’s offense would’ve lined up in some jumbo formation like they’re pretending to be 1995 Nebraska, tried some interior run when everyone on the stadium knew it was coming, had C. Johnson and potentially others get blown off the ball, and the play would’ve been stuffed.
That or another ridiculous play where the QB sprints to the line so suddenly but only causes one of his own linemen to jump (as had already happened in the game).
I think Drink knew his offensive line couldn’t be counted on for one yard in a jumbo formation, and he coaches too scared to try a play action and a quick tight end dump for 7-8 yards. For THIS TEAM, punting was the right call, but that’s just an indictment of the OL skill and coaching deficiencies.
