Don't get me wrong: I don't like coaches who constantly berate players, especially in full view of the fans in the stands and national TV audiences. But Odom almost seems too nice to his players, his coaches and especially the refs. I remember Pinkel going ballistic a few times in his tenure at Mizzou, especially after horrendous calls by the officials. He looked like he could kill in those situations, which is exactly the opposite of Odom's rather passive demeanor.
There are times when a player makes a bone-headed play or incurs a costly penalty when he should be reprimanded. Strongly. There are times when an assistant coach needs to be reminded that he'd better correct obvious problems or he might be coaching in high school next season. And, there are times when you need to get in a ref's face, even if it might result in a 15-yard penalty. Otherwise, they will probably defer to the opposing coach who does "work them" for his team's advantage. Plus, you need to show your team you have their back and won't stand idly by while an officiating crew screws them.
