Not sure what will happen to Coach Odom, but I know Sterk will let the year play out. That said, many in Tiger Nation are wrongly comparing the coaching situations in Football and Basketball. Unlike basketball where roster are so limited and we got lucky on the Porters and were the beneficiaries of Washington's stupidity, there are no instantaneous turn around hires in college football. Especially in the SEC and especially as a non-blue blood program.
While the losing makes such a comparison an easy reference for all of us couch potato warriors, Odom and Anderson have nothing in common beyond the fact both are alums. Anderson was always a stop gap measure and age wise was near the end of his coaching career regardless. Beyond going to a Final Four, it was a near certainty he was going to be moved out by Sterk.
Odom is a much different decision and football and much different animal. Odom is a young up and comer who is not yet in the prime of his career. He will be a head coach for many years, its just a question of whether it will be here. Sterk is really going to have to answer Odom's mantra from his recent post game presser... I am the man to do the job. Is Odom the guy? A fair case can be made that this program is in at least a partial rebuilding mode. You could also argue we will always be a underdog program in this league because we lack the resources of our competition.
The results on the field have clearly not been good, but Kentucky seemed to be an improvement and representative of a youth movement. A competitive effort against Georgia would go a long way to help Odom. Odom clearly has potential, but hasn't delivered a single thing yet. And we are upgrading our facilities, which makes it critical to take advantage of that momentum. If we win 3-4 more games, this will be an extremely difficult decision to make. Even so, keeping Odom will be a leap of faith on Sterk's part and will reflect that he truly believes he can get it done here.
Can we get anyone better with all the SEC jobs that seemingly will be open?
My prediction is he gets another year.
