First the delay of game penalty. I've never, ever seen a delay of game penalty called with a team just casually standing around talking. At any time, much less the end of a game. Usually the offense is at least lined up, desperately rushing to attempt to get the play in. No, Mizzou was just standing there like they were just watching a great game like the rest of us. And Boom! Flag comes out, tack on 5 yards. Crushing blow.
So Mizzou changes it mind, decides to run an offensive play to get a few more yards. Almost catches K-State off guard, for a second looks like we might sneak in a touchdown play. K-State barely calls time-out to save themselves... for the moment.
So Drinkwitz decides OK, let's try the kick again. An SEC record long kick by Mevis. K-State calls timeout to ice Mevis, and their coach sends in some different personnel. And then as the kick goes up, the TV announcer is focused on a flag thrown in the air. I'm thinking, this is so Mizzou, the fans rushing onto the field are going to have to get rounded up and sent back up to the stands to watch us lose in overtime. On the same day Corso picks Colorado for his 400th mascot pick, Mizzou is going to have the Colorado 5th down game ending re-created. The refs get together... and pick up the flag! The kick is good! Mizzou wins!
Then after the game, it's revealed the refs threw the flag on K-STATE. FOR HAVING 2 PLAYERS WITH THE SAME NUMBER ON. That's right. Not off-sides. Not for too many men on the field. Two players with the same goddamn number. And it was two players with #8, ONE OF THEM BEING THE KICK RETURN GUY SENT TO THE ENDZONE- BECAUSE OF THE PENALTY IT HAD TURNED INTO A 61 YARDER!
Mevis would've had another kick, had he missed. You can't make this stuff up.
Drink is playing chess, we're playing checkers.
Two of the most random, off-the-wall penalties involved on the same play, and it ended up in Mizzou's favor. This is a historic day indeed.
